    Hi,
How does your external drive connect - is it USB?
If so, you should start your new PC and make sure the external drive is powered up, then plug the external drive USB into your PC.
After a moment's delay, there should be a little chime and 'new device detected - external USB drive' should pop up in your taskbar (botton-right, near the clock).
USB devices are the only ones approved/designed to be plugged in 'hot' ie. you would never usually plug/remove devices with your PC powered up... except USB :^)
No, no, LoL - you're good, your data's there ;^)
Try hookup as described, hopefully simple solution...
    Regards

I am using windows xp sp2. I have tried all of the usb ports. I seen the divice manager and it was shown there but there was not an icon in "my computer" saying that i have a new drive installed (Letter drive).

uninstall the drive from device manager, restart windows to let it load it's driver

you could also go to control panel / admin tools / computer management and then disk management
if it's detected you can check it out here and mb it hasn't been assigned a drive letter yet (mine wasn't when i got it) and then i assigned it a letter somewhere in there, hehe it's been a while
