Im sure this may be commonplace now, but i wanted to share a quick and easy way to convert dvd video to an avi file that will play on ps3 and xbox 360. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Progs U need: DvdShrink AutoGK VirtuaDubMod AnyDVD- make sure this is on and up-to-date before you begin. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.Open dvd shrink. Go to Edit>Prefrences. Under "prefrences" tab select custom and enter 4300. Next click the "output files" tab and UNcheck "Split Vob files into 1gb chunks." Click ok to close the window. 2.Rip the movie in dvd shrink like you normally would. (Make sure to go to "reauthor" and select just the movie itself.) You can do extra things like cut off the end credits to save some space if you wish. **Make sure you save the movie as a video_ts folder, DO NOT create an ISO image!!** 3.After you have your file, go to the VIDEO_TS folder where you saved it. There should be one .vob file in there. Rename it to whatever you like, (preferably to the name of the movie), and change the ".vob" extension to ".mpg". Windows will pop up a warning, just click ok. Now youre done using dvd shrink. 4.Open AutoGK. We'll need to change a few settings here. Remember that file you just renamed? Good. Click on "input file" and find that movie and click "add job", (If you have several movies you can do a large batch and get them done all at once, just click input file again and find the next movie). Make sure to pick a spot under "output file" to save the movies as well. 5. After one or all your movies are displayed in the "job queue", click on "advanced settings"- -"Output resolution" you can leave on auto -"Output audio type" i just leave it on original to keep dolby digital 5.1 (feel free to change this to cbr mp3 192 if you want, it'll save some more space if youre tight on it). -Codec. Change this to "Xvid". 6. On the main window of AutoGK, under STEP 3, click on the "target quality (in percentage)" option and enter something at least about 80. The higher the number the better quality, but the filesize will be bigger of course. I left mine on 100 cuz i like my vids to look as good as possible. 7. Click "start" and wait. During this process AutoGK will magically open VirtuaDubMod (which does all the work anyway). When its all done you should have a fresh new .avi file. Burn multiple movies to a dvd, or load them on a usb drive and watch em on your ps3. Im pretty sure you can also use a usb drive to play avi movies on a 360 as well, (can someone verify this?) If not you can still burn them to a dvd and the 360 will play them fine. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Here are my results with the settings I used above: Average 1.5GB per movie. Practically dvd quality video. Zero loss of audio quality, (5.1 surround, Dolby Digital) -------------------------------------------------------------------- ******Remember you can always change the audio in AutoGK to mp3 192kbps to save even more space, and also change the "target quality" setting in AutoGK to a lower number (preferrably no lower than 80) to make an even smaller filesize if you wish!!! Its all up to you!!!***** If anyone has any questions Id be happy to assist. PLEASE POST HERE SO I DONT GET A BILLION PM'S. Hope this helps people out. Have fun!
I would suggest you rip the movie with either dvdfab or anydvd, as they are updated to handle the newer encryptions, since dvd shrink has stopped being updated in quite a few years. Also, here is the guide to using autogk http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd_to_avi_using_autogk.cfm
