I am new to games and have been playing farcry and totally enjoy it. The problem is that I cannot find another game of its standard. Can anyone make any suggestions. Also whenever I play farcry on any graphics detail higher than MEDIUM my computer freezes, has anyone else had this problem. My computer specs are: 2.20 gigahertz AMD Athlon XP 1024 Megabytes Memory Thanks Steve
Hi Steve, What graphics card do you have in your system? Farcry is quite resource hungry at higher details and a decent graphics card certainly helps. If that isn't the problem then I'm not too sure staright off, but I'd look there first. As to a game of it's standard, do you mean playability or graphically? My favourite all-time FPS was Half-life....until Half-life 2 came out. Graphically and playability, it was a masterpiece, in my opinion. Grab some demos of vairous games, you'll find something you like.
I have a RADEON 9500 PRO / 9700 card. Thanks for your help I will give half life a go. When you said grab some demos, is there anywhere online where you can get them? Thanks again Steve
Heres a few links mate. The card you have is *ok*, at it's time it was a cracking card, i remeber searching for the right kind of 9500 to unlock to a 9700, by the time I found one I was upgrading anyway so missed out on gettting one. It may struggle with some of todays games, but if you are willing to sacrifice a bit of eye candy for decent games you should be ok. http://www.ati.com/gitg/promotions/halflife2demo/ <<< Half-life 2 demo http://www.gamershell.com/download_10167.shtml <<<F.E.A.R SP demo http://www.gamershell.com/download_10902.shtml <<< COD 2 SP Demo http://www.gamershell.com/download_7059.shtml <<< Doom 3 demo http://www.download.com/Quake-4-demo/3000-7453_4-10467291.html << Quake 4 demo They should give you something to get stuck into, you may need to lower the detail no some, but the gameply is the same regardless and they all have very good points. In my opinion, Half-life 2 is the king of all those listed, but everyone prefers different kinds. Have fun finding a favoueite.
The absolute best are the ATI radeon X1900XT and Nvidia Geforce 5900GTX, but they are both PCI-Express. Yours is an AGP card, so unless you want to upgrade your motherboard too you need to look at them. It depends on your budget and where you live, but in agp you could have a 6600GT, fantastic midrange card, 6800GS, again a really good card to get going with and will handle todays games although detali will have to be tweaked on some games or a Radeon X850XT, the best of the last generation cards, last generation makes it sound old, but if you can get one at a decent price you wont be dissapointed! If you let us know whree you are or a budget you are willing to spend we can give you an idea, it's bedtime here for me, but I'm sure theres plenty of gamers awake. Later bud.
I am the happy owner of a 6600 Turbo - great card for the money! Half Life 2 has so many cool elements - and no game does headshots with a Handgun better lol. I'd also recommend F.E.A.R but your card will really struggle with that one. Not worth the cash for the experience if it runs a bit slower - you might be better off getting a better card first, but then it's all dead technology if it's AGP
Yeah, you'll have to put your settings down a bit though. Should run ok. My mate played HL2 on a TI 4800 just fine, and your's is the Radeon equivalent to that (or close to anyway). If yours is the pro then it's a 128Meg card right? Should be ok dude.
Hey whats up!! Just something to look at for the near future. You will need a "uber" graphics card/system for this one tho. It is being made by the same company that brought you FARCRY. Crysis http://pc.ign.com/objects/694/694190.html
I am also looking for some games i have... 2.4 Ghz Processor 750 Ram GeForce 6600 LE Graphics card Is it good enough to play F.E.A.R?
@KyKy91 Grab the demo and try it out. http://www.gamershell.com/download_10167.shtml I would have thought it would run, but you will definately have to turn some details down/off.
Hi DMW,You mentioned a Radeon X850XT video card. I am in Australia and I have come across a "ATI Radeon X850XT PCI Express 256mb DDR3 graphics card" is this the type you were talking about. Sorry I am very computer part iliterate as I have a friend who usually fixes my computer.
@keithyb Your not wrong there mate, I played HL2 on a Geforce3 TI200!! Saw it on another machine with, at the time a Radeon 9800Pro and I HAD to upgrade!!! @tonedeaf Thats the right chipset, but you need the AGP version to fit on your current motherboard. Im pretty sure they didn't remake your card in PCI express format, so unless you want to totally upgrade your system you need to look for AGP. Not sure on your local prices, but heres a few for the right card http://www.ausprices.com.au/cgi/Search?state=&q=x850xt+agp&cid=0
If your still online, what about any of these, any of them any good. They are all agp. Out of all those cards, the X1300 would be the best IF and only if it was the 128bit version. A few manufacturers made a 64bit version and it was pants! When it first came out I saw a few benchamrks around and it was beaten by a geforce 6600GT in most tests if I remeber rightly. A 6600GT or 6800 standard would be quote cheap now and would be a nice intermediary upgrade until you decide you want a ful system upgrade. Or like I said before the X850XT, although it is pretty costly compared to the 6600GT. I'll see if I can find the X1300 Benchmarks later, bedtime here again for me I'm afraid. Later.
