What's your processor (ie Intel P4, or AMD)? I suggest you add/upgrade more RAM, at least another 512MB or 1GB if possible. Make sure you don't have too many programs running at "startup".

    Hi,

    Try this,

Goto start, highlight run and type in msconfig and hit ok. Then you can choose the tab that says startup and you can disable some programs from running when you boot your pc. Also as alkohol stated try getting your memory up to at least 512mb, 1g if its in your budget. Good luck.

    Weird you would have :-

When HP says standard is 256 of PC2100.

This is non-expensive ram -- shop around for at least 512MB stick and you should be OK.

Increasing your Ram will not speed up your Boot time -- like someone said above -- removing as many applications at startup as you can will ! For example , a Creative Audigy Sound Card installed with the software will take as much as 10 seconds on your boot time to load the Creative Media Center. An ATI All In Wonder card will take another 8-10 seconds to load the ATI Catalyst Control Center.

In other words the less you have to load at boot time the faster you will be able to use your desktop !

but additional ram in this situation will help speed things up in bootup.

Not gonna go into a debate with you ! -- At boot time, -- applications loading is dependant on the amount of data that is required for each applications -- that time is the same if it need access to the RAM Bank or the pagefile system. the additionnal time it may take if the RAM is not sufficient, is measured in nanoseconds, therefore negligible --

Boot time is affected mostly by the number of applications and the degree of need those have to muster out of the resources. Norton's AV , Zone Alarm, and the likes are heavy time user ; but who wants to have to load them manually <Smile>. Cause what is 20 seconds extra , at boot time. !!!

    Have a great Evening !

    Edited for Typo !
