The fastest i have come across is WinAVI Video Converter, which will convert a full length film in about an hour depending how large your file is. It will cost 29.95 usd.

I have used it for a while now and i must say it`s a pretty good piece of software.

ECW, it does convert dvd to avi, but i have never tried it, the best thing to do would be to download the trial version and try it out, then you can judge the results for yourself. I hope that helps.

The fastest i use is divx to dvd.Takes about an hour per 700meg file.

    Stats on my pc are:

    AMD 2600+
    1024 DDR RAM
    500 WATT POWER SUPPLY
    etc etc.

The best bit is the program is currently free.
Another one to look at is mainconcept mpeg encoder which has basically the same time frame (takes between 1hr to 90mins)
