My hard drive suddenly went kaput without me backing up anything on it. Is there any way to get the files and photos off of it and onto the new hard drive. thanks

Depends on how it went "Kaput". Usualy a catastrophic failure means that you have to pay a small fortune for a professional to extract files one at a time.
