    Hello,
I am just looking for some advice on this project idea for my final year at uni. Basically it’s to create a program which can determine the difference between an original DVD and an illegal copy. What I'm wanting to know is would this be possible by looking at the DVD’s Anchor Volume Descriptor Pointer (AVDP) and find whether it is a pirate copy by:

    1. If the disc is written by studio or corporate level DVD burning software which would imply it is more likely to be original.

    2. In the header information if it is an originally pressed DVD ("Media code/Manufacturer ID N/A Pressed DVD"). Maybe that information is passed on when it is copied, I'm not sure yet.

    Thanks.

hahahahaha.. sorry.. it's not our place to do your assignments for you.

I don't think it's possible, otherwise the big studios and the M(afi)(p)aa would have already forced it into every single dvd player on the planet... and do you know something.. I'm not going to help you do that ;)

    Hahaha! Grow up.

I've since found out it is by seeing if the ATIP info is present.

    Really basic hint.
Legitimate Commercial DVD disks are pressed, not burned.

Hmm, look at the disc, see if it is pressed or burned, conclude whether or not it is a copy.

AND THEY GIVE YOU A UNIVERSITY DEGREE FOR THAT?

I think I wasted 4 years for nothing. I should have been playing video games instead.

Maybe if the label is made with a Sharpie, that would give you a clue too.

Just kidding. I think from these posts, there may be some challenge to your findings as in "why build a railroad if you are trying to transport 10 pounds of potatoes". Good luck with your project.

I only hope your about 13 otherwise you have some serious tampon issues.

Anyway thanks for any help offered. I thought this might be a good idea for a project because a lot of people haven't a good knowledge of computers and probably couldnt tell the difference between original and legit DVD's.

I fail to see why you have to bring feminine hygiene products into a discussion about whether dvds are copies are not.

And i agree with Miltex, a child could tell the difference!

I guess I made the mistake of expecting serious replies on an internet forum without it turning to pretty teen angst. I apologise. Goodbye.

Further proof of why i didn't miss anything by not going to University and instead working for 20+ years straight from school.

    This one's (overdone)done.
