Okay I just got high-speed internet. Now the pc I use is also used by my parents as a business pc, so their is some sensitive information on it. So if I have a router setup correctly, with a AES encrypted network and everything do I still need to use a firewall?
Most routers have a built in firewall for basic to medium/advanced protection. However, most of them I'm familiar with still have one fault. Though they block incoming traffic from scoping the PC...they don't usually block outgoing traffic, nor do they notify you if something like malware is sending information to the internet. Best to supplement them by getting a software firewall.
Okay, I had the standard ZoneAlarm firewall but it really killed the torrent traffic. Can you recommend a firewall that works well with torrents? If it helps I use uTorrent.
Been using Sygate's last version of their firewall before it got nabbed up by Symantec. It didn't have any issues with the Torrent software I was using back when I was working with large linux downloads... You should be able to set up open ports in Zone Alarm for the use with uTorrent.
Morph is right, try to to decrease the level of protection in zone alarm (high, medium, low), in the program control put a full access of utorrent programs, ports...
Okay Im so I have the free version of ZoneAlarm installed. I can't seem to be able to find a area in the program to open ports. @josh99 When you say full access do you mean to go to that window in ZoneAlarm that has the list of trusted applications and to make all the X's &/or ?'s green checks? (lol hope that last question made sense )
Since I am not familiar with ZA's interface, I'd say you'd have to add the program to the Allow list. (full access)
@PeaInAPod yes lol put a green check, but if have a good memory, i remember that you have the possiblty to put 1/2/3 green check(s), right? if im talking of the good zone alarm version put 3 green checks(more you put checks, more youre program is trusted)
Okay thanks yeah the ZoneAlarm I have as four areas that you can either give it an X,?, or a green check. So im off to do that and Ill post back. thanks
