So If You Update your firmware to a region free firmware lets say by the dangerous brothers, i no longer need anydvd for copying copy protected movies that i have purchased? if i still need anydvd after i update to a region free firmware then what is the sole purpose of haveing a region free dvd drive what does it do?
Hi killa711 Region free is only one thing AnyDVD does. It also removes all the copy protections like Ripguard and ARccOS. And then there's the Sony Rootkit removal too. Having a region free drive is good to play dvd's from other regions w/o having to run AnyDVD in the background.

Hi, killa711. All this talk of regionfree is misleading. Most drives are sold as RPC2 & as such need to be assigned a region. Add to this the fact that there's a limit to the number of changes to the region that can be made. RPC1 has no requirement for region selection. This means that the region is not "seen" by the drive. Therefore no need for selection. The responsibility for this if you like is passed on. However in PC terms there are or could be two more areas to cover before any region DVDs can be played. First OS often has a region aware aspect. Even if this is bypassed then the player software will still see the region. A program such as AnyDVD means that not only does your drive not "see" the region. Your software whether OS or player based does not see the region. Hence the term regionfree. All RPC1 allows is the ability to play DVDs from any region. There maybe a reason why someone might want to play a DVD with programs such as AnyDVD disabled. oh yea see i thought makein the drive region free would remove the protection on the dvd this is where i was getting confused.
