I just got a Sony DVD RW drive and so far haven't figured out how to use it.
After exploring this forum, decided I should update firmware.
I run the firmware update utility, and I get a message that says:
    "No matched drive detected!"
The odd thing is that it detects 2 DVD drives when there is only one on the comp (the DVD RW drive I just got)

I had to take out the old DVD drive (which was just a plain DVD drive) and put this DVD RW drive in it's place. My buddy helped me...I didn't do any of it myself, but he mentioned that he was making sure whether it was slave/master and making sure the pins fit properly. I assumed he knew what he was doing. Was I wrong? Should I go back and do it myself? If so, could someone direct me toward a forum that explains how to do that?

    Thank you!

What firmware update utility are you using? It sounds like it may not be the right one for the drive.
What's that model # of the Sony?

I got it straight from the Sony website and took the model number right off the box that my hardware came in, the model #s DRU 810A and it said it found a result for a DVD RW drive when i inserted it in.

I should also mention that when i go to "my computer", it doesn't seem to be recognizing the DVD RW drive as an RW drive but rather just a DVD rom drive. And the other funny thing is that there are 2 dvd rom drives listed under "my computer" when all I have physically connected to my comp is the DVD rw drive. whats da deal wit dat?

The Sony site lists ver 1.0F as the latest firmware. Is this what you used? Did you re-boot after installation?

The utility refused to run because it claims I don't have that DVD RW drive connected to my comp. I'm beginning to think that my bud installed the drive wrong, tho he claimed to know what he was doing, using terms like "slave", "master", etc.

I'm probably going to try to find a forum that explains how to correctly attach the drive to the computer if someone doesn't have a link they can give me, which btw would be greatly appreciated.

is the drive on its own ide cable? it could be its not set ok jumper wise for slave/master, if on its own use end of ide cable not middle and set as master for most instances, although i have known jumper out completely also.

you can use imgburn = tools / drive / check firmware updates

seeing 2 drives can mean you may have a virtual drive installed from say nero/alochol 120%/deamon tools etc etc

    Here's a guide sllab02 on installing a dvd drive - link.
Check it out to see if yours is hooked up correctly - it's pretty easy and may just be the jumpers aren't set correctly like rotary pointed out.

alright, the multiple drives thing is solved - yes I did have a virtual drive mounted via Daemontools, so that problem is solved

however, shouldn't the drive show up in my computer as "DVD-RW" drive? it says DVD-ROM

I've succesfully decrypted the files from DVD movies and used DVD shrink on them, but whenever I open nero (although I'm not quite sure which utility to use, 'recode dvd', 'copy dvd', etc) none of the utilities seem to list my DVD-RW as an available destination drive.

I checked that site that Binkie suggested, was slightly confusing at times but I think I have my drive set up properly...the DVD-RW drive is set to "master", the CD-RW drive is set to "slave" and that weird ribbony cable is going from the motherboard to the harddrive to the CD-RW and finally to the DVD-RW.

I have no idea what to do. Should I assume that I don't know what I'm doing when I look at the connections inside the comp and get a pro to come over and show me? arrrrrg

    Try this guide - link.
Check the jumper pins on the back of both drives - the jumper on the burner should be set to master and the cd-rw should be set to slave sinc this is how you have them on the ide cable.

Now if you have a Dell pc the jumper pins should be set to cable select.

Yes the drive should show as dvd-rw in device manager.

What version of Nero are you using? You might also need an update to te latest version.

hmmm maybe and start over me thinks...

maybe you have 2 ribbon cables, which is normal as motherboards have 2 slots/ide = 4 possible drives, 2 on each cable only. also do you have the cable the right way round? the 2 connectors closer together are for drives, the further away connector from the other 2 goes to motherboard!

    you need to clarify

I used dvd shrink succesfully, but when I open ImgBurn, it doesn't provide the DVD-RW as a destination, just the CD-RW. In the ImgBurn log that opens up when i first run the program, it says "Found 1 CD-RW and 2 DVD-ROM drives" when in reality I have one CD-RW drive and one DVD-RW drive. I don't get that. That must mean things aren't set up properly right? If so I'm probably just going to get my buddy to come over and help me with set it up, because I'm not smart enough to describe over the internet just what it is I'm looking at.

my apologies; there is one ribbon going from the motherboard, then to the cd-rw then to the dvd-rw. there is another ribbon going from the motherboard to the hard drive. missed that at first. i barely open my computer.

however the problem still stands that none of the applications im using seem to think i have a dvd-rw drive...the log that appears when I succesfully used dvdshrink on the dvd i want to burn, but when I open imgburn, the logfile says it found 1 cd-rw drive and 2 dvd-r drives when i REALLY have 1 cd-rw drive and one dvd-rw drive. thats where the real problem is. do i need to get somebody to look at my comp? because I think after looking at those set up guides that it IS set up properly. but i dont know about these things.

sorry about the confusion, but please dont lose hope!

W 16:02:31 Drive F:\ (FAT32) does not support single files > 4 GB in size.

means you cant use iso files as they are over 1 gig size! most people dont use fat32 anymore its old most are NTFS.

so you need to output from dvd shrink as files! not iso

then load files to imgburn in / MODE / BUILD load files in... then burn...

your problem with dvd drives could be fat32???? but i would plum for jumper settings on the back of the drives themselves, one needs to be MASTER set and 1 set to SLAVE.

jumpers are very small like blocks that you can pick out off small pins... you need to move these accordingly, end of cable is master setting drive, middle is slave, other end fits in motherboard and needs nothing. leave hd alone also!

    ===========================================================

To convert an existing FAT or FAT32 volume to NTFS, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
    2. At the command prompt, type the following, where drive letter is the drive that you want to convert:
    convert drive letter: /fs:ntfs
For example, type the following command to convert drive E to NTFS:
    convert e: /fs:ntfs
Note If the operating system is on the drive that you are converting, you will be prompted to schedule the task when you restart the computer because the conversion cannot be completed while the operating system is running. When you are prompted, click YES.
    3. When you receive the following message at the command prompt, type the volume label of the drive that you are converting, and then press ENTER:
The type of the file system is FAT.
Enter the current volume label for drive drive letter
    4. When the conversion to NTFS is complete, you receive the following message at the command prompt:
    Conversion complete
    5. Quit the command prompt.

That (drive F:\),could be just just a Fat32 partition or a spare drive. I wonder if C:\ is FAT32...if it were, probably DVD Shrink would give an error while outputing the ISO? Don't know, don't do FAT32...

Also, we need the rest of the log....

    hmmm

D= first drive (whatever jumper settings)
    E= second drive(^same^)
    F= hard drive

i wonder if the ata cables to mobo are in wrong location?

F= ATA2 - when it should be in ATA1 first in boot sequence, and get the usual C:\

hmm, still doesnt account for fat32...
