With those limited options, I'd go with the Benq 1655. It has the philips chipset and all my experience with benq drives, they are quality drives.I've got a pc of crap HP lightscribe,so If I had to replace it,it would be with the 1655. Fortunanty the lightscribe and reading is the only successful parts of that HP drive.Backups are very poor. I don't know much of the other 2 drives with dvd-rom. Benq has the DQ60 with the dvd-ram,but I'd ignore that drive.I don't know how the addition of dvd-ram will affect the compatability of your backups on stand alone players. I have no need for dvd-ram. Why have a separate dvd-rw drive, and another drive to write cds? My benqs do both and are superb-near original quality. You can get you a good lite on dvd-rom drive like the 167T for $20-$30. Sony is another brand of dvd-rom that I would consider.Use the dvd-rom drive-which also is a cd-rom-for the ripping and keep your new burner strictly for burning purposes only. That'll save a lot of wear and tear on your burner drive. Under $60? Benq 1620 and 1640 if you can find them.Ebay has a slew of the 1620s. NEC 3550 Plextor 740A may be just a tad more. Lite-0n LG Check out my thread in the dvd-rw forums. It has a link that I used to order my benq 1650,and around $61 including shipping. I am anal when it comes to dvd burners, but I expect the same quality with this drive. After learning the difference between quality burners and crap burners, quality drives are a must. The Main reason: Stand alone compatability and playability!
Thanks for the reply! I picked the cd r/dvd rom since it was only $9.00 more then the cd/dvd rom and figured it would come in handy if I need to burn 2 audio cds at a time. If that's possible, if you think I could find a better DVD burner with the extra $10 from downgrading that to a cd/dvd rom then I'll definatley consider it. So the 1650 is superior to the 1655? The newegg reviews of the 1655 are sort poor but I would trust afterdawn's user opinions much more.
OK, should i order the 1655 at newegg for $62.88? (w/ 10 free LightScribe CD's?) Or is the 1650 a better drive and cheaper? I cant findd anwhere thats selling them at the moment and I kinda need to know now!! Gotta order soon. Thanks
Here's the link to benq 1650: http://www.us.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=17704 The thread I started is in the dvd +/-r drives room.Second page.
