hey all. i've had a sony dru 500ax for about 3 weeks now and am not having much luck playing backup dvd movies on my ps2.

i've had two successes, both of them DVD-5's burnt on cheapo compusa dvd-r's using DVDDecrypter as the afterdawn guide suggests (doing the rip and burn as iso).

Since, i've yet to have a dvd-9 backup work in my ps2 (version 5). maybe this should go in the dvd-r for media section, and i may post there, as well, but part of my question is to ask whether this is a media or a method issue.

The media I've used for dvd-9's are:
    Memorex
    Ritek
    BeAll
    TDK
(and, of course, the cheapo compusa)

all with no success. this is ripping with dvd shrink and burning with either nero (using mccann's guide) or pinnacle.

these backups will play on my boss's sony dvd player, on my good friend's car audiovox dvd player, and are autodetected as a dvd movie by my pc, but not on my ps2, which is kind of my portable dvd player which i use quite a bit.

    any suggestions?

Yes, get a standalone DVD player! Seriously, they're as cheap as dirt and the el cheapo's from China play just about everything under the sun.

As for your PS2, what version is your PS2? I'm kind of new to that scene but do you have a mod chip installed? Have you tried these backups on another PS2?

The PS2 is version 5. I'm beginning to think this is a method issue, as straight iso burns of dvd-5's as iso's with dvddecrypter work fine.

i checked out the huge thread (117 posts and counting... this thread should be locked up top, has lots of good suggestions) in dvd for newbies a couple of pages in and got some good ideas as to changing my methods. One thing i found kind of crucial was that both rotary and ddlooping disagree with mccann.co.uk's guide -- both say to use ISO level 1 and to uncheck all the boxes under Relax ISO restrictions when using nero to burn. Seems like somebody should tell Chris McCann or something.

anyways, i'm right now trying a burn with burnatonce. hopefully, i will have good news.

    thx for your help.

well, guys, i guess i'm spamming my own original post, but after making a ton of coasters with Pinnacle and Nero, I've finally had success (using the same set of .vob files created and shrunk with dvdshrink, mind you, and on the same media) with burnatonce . it works everywhere i've tried it, where nero and pinnacle burns were playing elsewhere but not on my ps2 or set-top box.

time to head over and paypal some $ that dude's way.
