Hello All, My name is James and like my topic had said I am brand spanking new to this forum. I did kinda look around for a topic that I needed help on but I didn't find it so I thought that I would ask you guys/gals for your input. I build computers for fun so I am not a hardware noob and in my system I currently use a TDK 16/10/40 burner and also a DVD player but I don't know the specs of it but it is about 1.5 years old and both units work great. So heres my dilemma, after every 3-5 months my computers WindowsXP registry will get so porked that I will have to do a format and then a reinstall of everything. This past weekend I got a pretty good software program for backing up my HDD. But I don't know what I should use with it. So far I have saved a copy to my slave HDD but... here comes the questions: 1) I was going to use a blank CD-RW disk but I was led to believe that CD-RWs are not safe at all, so are they now? 2) Since DVD burners hold so much more info I am thinking about getting a real good one like the Plextor Model# PX-712A (12x speed DVD +RW/-RW) I do not plan to make copies of any of my DVD movies, so saying that would the Plextor unit be an overkill for me or what? I would use it for making incremental WIndows backups and also for my other hobbie which is digicams so I have over the years compiled quite a few pictures of large sizes. What would you guys suggest is the best optical drive for my purposes? Heres my systems specs: WinXP AMD-3000XP+ ASUS A7N8X delx.mobo 1Gig 2700DDR Radeon-X800*PRO Cable modem Creative 550W [speakers] Audigy2 SC 500W P/S 120G WD-HDD ATA133 40G IBM-HDD ATA66 TDK-Burner 161040X 16xDVD/42xCD DX-nine 22" NEC/Mitsubishi Thanks so much for helping a stranger out SJ
LOL good call .... the Plexy, while nice, is a tad of overkill unless you intend to use it to the max
