I'm aware of the ImToo Ripper Platinum tool but it is
not freeware (looks to be a great program though.)

I just need to recode a dvd (no copy protection--
this is of a lecture) to AVI so I can use Nero Express
to put some chaptering on it when the speakers on the
    content change.

I have not been able to make Nero Recode do this particular
    trick.

Operating system is Windows 98 or Win2000 Pro.

If it's just DVD to AVI give Mpeg Mediator a go. Make sure you have the correct AVI codec (DivX, Xvid) installed on your computer, along with mp3 Lame codec for the audio. Mpeg Mediator (freeware) hasn't been updated for a while but will do everything you need- even resize the video for playback.

Ok I'll check it out. It's new name to me.

All I want to do is get it into AVI (which ImTOO will
do for $45) and put some chapters on it.

Is there a guide for this?

Or can I just point he prog. to the directory and
    and say 'do it.'?

My Lame encoder is installed at my audiograbber
directory. Audiograbber is a free program well worth
    getting.

The other question that's been bugging me is why
(never mind the ethics of it) do none of the keygens
purported to open shareware copies trial programs
work? Why do people bother posting something the doesn't
    work in the first place?

Here's a guide for using Mpeg Mediator (ignore the bit about the plug-ins not being free- as long as you have the (free)DivX codec and/or the Xvid codec installed you'll be fine). I've never tried to put chapters in an AVI- I don't know if it can be done. Perhaps someone could help here?

As for your last point- they probably enjoy the thought of someone sitting there scratching their head spending hours working out why it's not working!

    Yeah yeah ok.

Well, I downloaded Mediator as a zip package and
neither stuffit expander nor 7-zip will open it.

    What's up with that?

Does mediator have to have a particular OS to open
    the zip file?

    I'm stumped.

Yep, I was there now and before and the error I get
is that it is not a supported archive from 7-zip

If this is a standard .zip extension why have 2
    expanding programs refused it?

Where can the .exe file be obtained for installation?

    Zip files make me crabby.

I think you want to re-install 7-zip before you continue.

    hmmm ok.

Would still prefer an exe self installer though.

This package is funny. The link above had some sort
of auto downloader as part of the d/l.

Since I never heard of this one are there any others?

ImToo sample prog. went real smooth but I only get
    5 minutes worth.

Anything in Nero recode? That's a full program I have
    that came with the burner.

The package is OK- I downloaded it just to make sure and it opened in 7-zip with no problem. If you're worried run a virus check and set a Restore Point before opening it- that's what I always do before installing anything I've downloaded.

Maybe I'm just using 7zip incorrectly.

I upgraded from 4.32 to 4.42 and got the same error.

    What's the keystroke sequence?

I normally right click to open 7zip on the
    desktop and select extract.

Inside the user interface, I've also selected extract
    and gotten the same error.

My regular program is Stuffit 7.0 (last free version).
Stuffit (which normaally performs flawlessly tanks on
    this app. too.

Since this is free, can someone send as an attachment
or point me to a torrent?

Word from the browser was that the torrent for MPEG
Mediator, wherever it is is broken.

Could someone put that up since it is freeware to
    one of the torrent sites?

I'm sure it will be appreciated.
