This may not be relevent to Afterdawn, but I have a slightly old computer (about 2 years) that has become very slow. I want it to run like new or at least remove some of the problems to make it less annoying.

There are programs that cost money, but the administrator would rather blame me for all the downloads I've done and commandeer my private computer and set it up for public use in place of the one that is 2 years old.

Is there any freeware out there that can help me? The computer will most likely support anything suggeted, so don't ask what the specs are. It is Windows XP. So any freeware for this operating system that will help me will greatly be appreciated.

so you're looking for software to clean up and repair your PC? Well its probably bloated with spyware, adware, and maybe even a few viruses.

First download AVG 7 Free. As the name implies, its free, and its one of the best anti-virus apps there is. You can find it at download.com. So install that and scan your computer for viruses.

Next download adaware. Its also free and you can also get it from download.com. Install and update it, then scan your system for adware.

Same thing goes for spybot search and destroy. Its another good tool for removing adware/spyware.

Then run ccleaner (www.ccleaner.com) to remove any other un needed files that is bloating your system.

    CCleaner - Very good program
Microsoft anti spyware - Quite good for free but still in Beta mode.
Sunbelt Counterspy - Extremely good (trial period) worth the 20.00AUD
Trend Micro Anti-virus would have to be the best. Free online scan.
AVG anti virus is sh*t. Other than that do a "windows disccleanup" and "Disc Defragment" and you should have a pretty clean PC.
    Just my 2 cents worth.

well just because you have mcafee doesn't mean you don't have viruses. for example, norton is a horrible virus program. I used to use it, but then decided to switch to AVG, which instantly found 7 viruses, two of which were trojans that norton missed.

AVG IS a very good virus program, other than AVAST is another good one. Why do you think AVG is bad...its highly reguarded as one of the best out there.

Ok sorry for bagging AVG, but I have had viruses on computers which were up to date with virus definitions and AVG would detect the virus but not heal or delete it. I would have to say it is better than norton though.

well if norton works for you then kudos, but I hate to be the one to break it to you, but norton truely is one of the worst ones out there. Like I said above, I used to be an avid norton fan, just like you. I thought that "free" ones were crap, and that norton was king. But then ddp finally convinced me to install AVG 7 Free, and right away it found seven viruses, two were trojans.

So you may like norton, but all I'm saying is don't be suprised if your system crashes due to a virus norton missed.

yeah man give it a try. I'm not trying to knock on you or anything, I just want to share my experience and hopefully keep you and others from getting viruses that crash their system due to norton like I did.

i have a customer with norton & all the updates & avg7 found 13 viruses. customer was not happy. another customer had a virus that norton found but not heal or delete, had to go thru the dos side to manually delete when it wouldn't delete manually in safe or normal mode. i do the online scan to just confirm system is clean.

well, i tried avg 7 and there are no viruses

after that i tried spybot s&d, which turned out that there were no threats, or so i thought...

i had accidently downloaded Spyware Doctor and though it costs money to fix problems i decided to start scanning to see a second opinion

    it found over 300 infections

    why wont Spybot find these?

spyware docter uslly picks up small things and even if all the spyware comes from 1 location or 1 type of virus it tell you everything thats why you get 300 ,for me spybot usally picks up the most

use Ad-Aware, its usually the best at finding and removing infections. Its free and is by far the most popular program for removing adware and spyware
