I dunno whats causing it to crash but instead of rebooting the machine you can just restart explorer.exe (which runs taskbar) by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, choose Task Manager, click the Processes tab, scroll down and select explorer.exe and then click End Process. This will end the windows explorer shell and leave you with your other programs running without errors.

Once youve ended explorer.exe you will need to restart it (if it doesnt restart itself) by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, choose Task Manager, click the Applications tab, click New Task and then type explorer.exe to restart Explorer.

As for finding the cause i would bet it was some kind of malware\spyware that has tried to install a Toolbar of some kind that is corrupt and is causing taskbar to hang. A scan with the usual spyware scanners should find something or right click on the taskbar and check the toolbar section for something that shouldnt be there. e.g (Bonzai Search Bar)
