I have a Satellite receiver that has an external hard drive connected to it. I have tried to get Windows to recognise the file that it makes, so that I can make a DVD of what I have recorded. The receiver is a Manhattan plaza st 550. After making a recording onto the hard drive, I take the hard drive to the computer and connect it as the secondary master, which can be read from the primary master. I then try to read what is on it from the other hard drive on my computer. It does say that there is a media file on it, but does not recognise it as a windows file. Widows explorer cannot read the file, so I am unable to read the file extension. I did try and have Windows on the drive before I connect it to the receiver, but it would not accept that at all. Can anyone tell me please, should I be able to read the file or convert it to mpeg using the PVAStrumento program, or is there an easier way, or maybe even other software i can use. Regards, Bobby.
Don't you have a video input device on your pc, like on your graphicscard maybe, if so this would be a much easier way of getting media to your pc.

open your second hard drive, click on view and select details. It should give you a file name and extension such as movie1.avi. If it does not click tools select folder options and the view tab, uncheck 'hide extensions for known file types.' What is the file name and extension. If you can find the extension, you can get the right program/codec/plugin so windows will recognize the video.
I've never tried this myself since the DVB service here in the US (ie Dish Network) isn't nearly as user friendly for copying as it is elsewhere but I think you may want to try opening the files with DGMPGDec (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=87809).
I am having a similar problem... I use MediaCenter to record Satellite Programs which I would like record to disk and save some HD space by placing them on DVD. The filetype extension that MCE uses is .dvr-ms which I think authenticates with a publisher for playback purposes and does not allow playback by no other application(s). I have not found a solution as of yet. There should be a way to recordine satellite broadcast without breaking the rules.

I cant really reply about the satellite file extension, I have heard tivo use a linux os, but Flaming if your media center came with windvd it will convert dvr-ms files to dvds, my mce2005 did, and there is a $20.00 program that installes into the mce interface called www.powercompress.com, that will convert to wmv files, its not the fastest, but it does a good job, and GREATLY reduces the file size.
