Um...If the movie is in AVI format , Then u won't be able to burn it onto the DVDR , and watch it on ur DVD, But if it has VOB files and stuff like that then Yes it will work , Other people will help you with this.

you are 100% wrong by saying this. Most of the movies you download are not downloaded as dvd files and have to be converted.

You can get those .avi files onto a dvd-/+r using a program like convertXtodvd or even Nero. It takes your .avi file, converts it into dvd compliant files and allows you to burn them to blank dvd.

winrar files can also produce a VCD .........which would make the use of Nero Burning ROM to burn to a CD!

    Hey,
This is the AVI file answer to your dilemma:
Get AVI file from utorrent (if you downloaded a RAR file it MIGHT unzip to an avi file, maybe not always. If it is a CUE/BIN file thats another story for another time).
ConvertXtoDVD (If you don't have it then get it, hint utorrent)
After converting it (for me a 2 hour film takes about 3 hours to convert), ConvertXtoDVD will burn it as well.
    All done, enjoy.

Look harder at the ConvertXtoDVD torrents. In the meantime remove the software you downloaded.
    Cheers.

TyLaw: instead of looking for a virus filled crack for the pay program, use Locoeng's advise and give dvd flick a try. I think you will find it a very easy program to use.

Why would he want to remove the software listed in his first post? They won't help him with converting avi's to a DVD compliant file, but they are certainly useful for ripping.

Just wish there was a better way to know what your getting from a movie torrent instead of trial and error lol (if there is, please tell me lol)

btw, i just said the heck with it and bought convertxtodvd, so far i like it

You are oh so clever, how many times are you going to repeat this?

ConvertXtoDVD is well worth the few dollars it cost.

Wow, I've seen this question so many times I think it's time I write one of my FAMOUS "How the heck do I do that" guides!

Question: I figured out that I needed Utorrent to download movies and other things from the torrent sites but some of the stuff is not easily playable on my TV... How can I do that?

Answer: Here's what I do. Everything is legal and free (not a pirate version of that DVD converter they push like crazy here at After Dawn)

First, understand that you have to know what you are getting BEFORE you download your torrent. Look at the file list on the torrent site, or look on the file list when Utorrent loads up. uTorrent allows you to select some files and un-select the ones you don't want.
The most common video format is .AVI and the most common codec used in most AVI's seems to be DIVX.
Most newer DVD players will play a properly encoded DIVX AVI file if burned onto a DVD as a FILE. That is, you can make a normal DATA DVD and put the files on it and your DVD player might just play it. A DVD can hold about 5 or 6 movies like this and they play without chapters. Each movie is a "next title".
Sometimes the AVI's are not Divx or they are not encoded well so they don't play on your DVD player, or your DVD player just doesn't play Divx AVI's so you want to turn those AVI's into an actual DVD "Movie". A fully compatable, DVD compliant DVD video, complete with chapters and everything.
    I use Divx toDVD
It seems as if this is the free version of the "ConvertXtoDVD" software everyone is raving about. It has no limitations is is very simple and works quite well.
It takes about one hour per movie to encode on my machine which is about 3 years old.
Basically, you open one or two movies in the program and hit the start button. When it's done you have the Video_TS folder with all the files needed for a DVD compliant video.
Burn these files into the Video_TS folder of your DVD using your burning software and you're all set. You can only fit one or two movies onto a disk.

BUT... you'll not get any menus and two movies MIGHT be too big so this is what I do...
Use Divx to DVD to convert one movie at a time and then use DVD Shrink to put the two movies onto one disk, that way, if it's too big you can compress it.
Also, the resulting VOB files are compliant MPG files that can be loaded into any menuing software if you want to make menus.

    Other problems with torrents...
"How do I know what I'm getting before I download it?"
Torrents are commonly filled with spam and other crap. If you are gonna mess with torrents you really need to have a good virus program like Avast! or AVG. Also, learn how to spot the bad stuff. Sometimes movies will be RAR'ed and that's ok... but a movie that is Rar'ed will contain MANY RAR files... not just one big 700mb Rar. If it's a Rar file and there is only one file then it's probably spam or a virus. Also, read the comments for the torrent. Most people will warn ya if it's a bad file. (You should also warn others if you know of a bad file). Download from trusted users and look for files that are popular. I usually sort the torrent list by the number of seeders by clicking on that column. This will put the most popular torrent at the top of the list. You can usually trust a torrent that is being seeded by 5000 people!!! :D
And finally, if you get duped into downloading something that turns out to be bad, just delete it and move on. but for crying out loud make sure you delete the torrent from your torrent client so you are not seeding the bad file!!!

Here's some of the tools I use for converting, manipulating, encoding and messing with videos...

    VSO DivxToDVD
Media Coder <---- the best, free encoder out there (but it's tricky to use)
    DVD Shrink
    Ahead Nero
    Nero Vision
    and finally,
Media Portal (Like Media Center, but FREE and MUCH better)

And oh, I highly recommend getting a video card that has a TV out plug. It's much easier to play a video from the computer to the TV than it is to do all these conversions!

Not true. Most (almost all)are Xvid.

The various flavors of Xvid though can be problematic.

No it's an early beta (and a poor choice these days) of DivxtoDVD, note the version, 0.5.2b. ConvertXtoDVD it's successor, is at 2.2.3.
