Is there a way I can purchase a UK movie on DVD thru Amazon.com and Convert it from Region 2 PAL to Region 1 NTSC for viewing on my stand alone.

One of my fav flicks is available only thru UK and not in America...The Quatermass Experiment ~ 1957 early Hammer Films.

    Thanks

    Lee

Perhaps a better option is to buy a JVC code-free, region-free DVD player. I have one like that and it’s great. It converts everything so you can watch UK video on a US TV. Blackstar may be better than Amazon.

Rather than buying a new DVD player for just one movie, I'd suggest tring some software. I think I've seen that in some of my software (DVD shrink), and a friend is sending me a PAL regeon 2 disc to try out. I'll keep you posted.

Or, if anybody else has any suggestions.........

There was one thread where I remember reading that TMPG does PAL-NTSC conversion. It was mentioned there that the frames jumped around a bit. Please also check
    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/31236

Procoder goes for about $275 roughly the same price of a JVC.

I ahev been working on this for a while as I have all of the series "Cold Feet" on PAL DVD here in NTSC-land.
I am using Canopus Procoder, and have gotten good video results, but have yet to get an audio track to sync properly (they start fine, then go off at the end). According to other threads I have read, audio seems to be the big problem when doing this conversion -> I have tried Besweet, but think that another trip back to the drawing board is needed (maybe Besweet and Cooledit?)..

The audio presumably drifts off because you are adding fames in (or removing them) to go from 25fps (PAL) to 29 FPS (NTSC) and therefore this throws the audio out, although in theory the movie should remain the same length.

CCE can covert to PAL or NTSC then you could whack the resulting mpeg in maestro and the audio track and then have maestro create a new audio track that exactly matches the films length.

Just a thought, never tried it as my machine plays both (I was under the impression that most did, obviously not)

I must admit I know sweet fanny adams about CCE, maestro, Besweet or Cooledit. However,
the foregoing discussion simply confirms my belief that there is no substitute for hardware-based conversion. By the look of things, leestrada could do a good deal worse than purchasing a code-free, multi-system DVD player.

I got some movies from Japan that would not play in my PS2 and my DVD player, nor my computer. It says something that the region did not match. I ran it through DVD Decrypter, shrank it with DVD2One and burn it with Nero. now the copys work in all my machines.

Japan is region 2 same as the UK. if you are in the States (region 1)then you would have to remove the region code to play it. As Japan is NTSC (the same as the States) you did not covert the frame rate or resolution.

Region code and TV system are not the same thing.

i have done nstc to pal, so maybe the same process will work the other way round.

dvd-decyrpter-decrypt all files first it doesnt matter what region yr dvd rom is decrypter will do it but just take longer
in dvd decrypter there is a multi-region patch in the list of options along the top, locate where the files are, hit the button and its done, nstc play fine in my region 2 player without making it mutlti-region, if you open up you patched files you will see that all the regions should show up in dvddecrypter 0,1,2,3,4,.

it might work, try it its not along process though it does mean backing up the dvd onto a dvdr using dvd2one so it might defeat the purpose. Any way its great for region 1s its about time europe came in line with dvd and cinema releases and vice versa for the usa for good quality uk releases.

    Again:
TV system and region coding are not the same thing. Removing the region code does not render an NTSC DVD into PAL or vice versa.

The version of Procoder I have is 1.01.35.
When doing the PAL to NTSC conversion the audio is output as a WAV file. I assume that this WAV file would already be converted from 25 to 23.976 fps (meaning Bewsweet framerate converison would not be necessary when converting back to AC3), but the length is always off from the video file.
I have tried using DVDMAestro to "sync up" the tracks, but this has not worked due to the time differential in the two files. As someone above mentioned, Cooledit should solve this problem, and I will post if I get it working. Unfortunately, it may be some time as I will be on the road for the next week or two.
The other option is a method advocated by the guys over at DVDrhelp.com that uses TMPGEnc, Besweet, Cooledit, and BBMpeg:
    http://www.dvdrhelp.com/forum/userguides/78178.php
The final resource I can offer is another thread dealing in more detail with the audio issue, unfortunately it "died" with no final solution being offered:
    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/3563
Good luck on this problem, and please update us if you find a solution, I will be sure to if I figure things out on this end.
