Not answering for Mickah here but the two cables from your dish to box are to enable sky+, that means the recording feature of your box. It needs one cable for live feed and another to use the dual-tuner feature. I have never tried using one cable only to a sky+ box but I would imagine it would be okay but you will not be able to use sky+ features such as pause, rewind, fast forward etc. (I say I would imagine, I have never done this). Then the other cable should be fine to use for a fta box elsewhere.
It might just be easier to get a quad output LNB and then you'd have two to sky+ box and you would have 2 more spares rather than 1!! Quite cheap Maplins etc.

mooley thanks for the tech info i was thinking i could put a splitter on one sky cable and run it to the fta box but the quad lnb seems a better option also is it a major hassle to fit lnb quad and tuning not the best at the tech side

ps any ideas on the best fta box to get ? thanks in advance great info ........

No worries man. It's very straight forward to replace the LNB on dish because your not moving the dish at all, have a look at the existing LNB before you buy the new one and see how it connects on so when you go to buy your new one you'll know the right type to get there's not really that many variations and some of them say 'for sky dish'. If it's purely FTA you want to receive then any FTA box will do really. Aldi, Lidl, Maplins etc. all do different ones very cheap. Hope this helps mate.
