I was interested in FTPing some music to my Xbox, since the CD-Rs I burned didn't work. I should have figured that. Upon googling, I found some programs that convert the media format so its read out of the music directory folder off the Xbox. If you dont use these programs, the music wont read. I didn't bother to read more, but I am assuming thats for the M@ dash way to play music? I also don't want a trial or cr4k for PC flash client, so we will use IE later. I already have UnleashX, installed XBMC with the A1D4.5 disc, and I am using the UnleashX Start FTP button. ** For Vista Users like me: Go to Network & Sharing Center, Click 'Manage Network Connections' Right-Click 'Local Area Connection' Click 'Properties' Click 'Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)' Click 'Properties' Click 'Use the following IP address' Enter IP Address: 192.168.0.1 and Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 Click 'Close' Make sure your Xbox has a static IP - usually 192.168.0.2 ** Once you have the LAC set, start up your Xbox. Click on "StartFTP' With the crossover cable connected to your PC, open up internet explorer. Type 'ftp://192.168.0.2/' and press enter. You should see the Xbox folder directories. Now click Page, and then click Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer. You will now see the Xbox Directories in a folder like window. Goto E:\, and create a folder called (anything you want, this is your music folder). I suggest making folders for each artist to stay organized. You can now copy/paste music from your PC to your Xbox! Lastly, how to play the music. Remember we have XBMC installed, so launch that. Goto music, and on the bottom select 'Add Source'. Your music is now enjoyable, enjoy! Hope this helped some vista users and people who don't want to buy FlashFXPs or download illegal torrents. Nuff said.
Firezilla works nice, I justdownloaded it. Either way, my other Vista computer has no internet connection, so I had no choice but to use IE. There are tons of FTP client for free, firezilla just got my vote. Either way hope the vista tip helped some people!
Lastly a small note for FTP with IE: This filename will result in an error when transfering: "All That Remains_-_Two_Weeks.mp3" Though you don't encounter these errors with most FTP clients, heres a work around: "AllThatRemains-TwoWeeks.mp3" After transfering numerous songs before firezilla, I often had to rename the song files (videos too) to shorter names, or remove symbols like like "_,(#&", for some reason, just get an error. Someone else might know why, firezilla works nice though
Filezilla doesn't like filenames that are too long, have never bothered checking out the exact character limit as i only ever FTP movie files onto an xbox for temporary use, so if a filename is too long, Filezilla fails then i just rename it so it's shorter and FTP again. All my main files live on the main PC and are streamed to the xbox, though i do sometimes FTP the odd music album over from time to time, if they fail i just rename them. Game files always seem to have sensible (ie short) filenames as i don't recall ever coming across any game files failing to transfer.
Eh or you could do it my way. Download and install winrar, select everything you want and ZIP it (make sure it's zipped and not rared). Name the archive like "1" or something short. You can then easily transfer it on your xbox then unzip it and all the file names will be intact. This is how i get around any errors with surreal64. You have to remember to keep the contents of the zip file below a gig or you can't use zip format.
That's a good one, hadn't thought of that (grey cells are getting old), was too busy thinking about the actual FTP program failing to consider whether the xbox itself was happy with long filenames. Most music files are made up of stupidly (overly) long filenames (most likely created by Windows users) anyway and i don't bother putting much music on xboxes but i'll certainly remember that tip.
