ok i have been reading about gamecube modding. Is the mod for the gamecube simular to the Xbox(can i store games on a hard drive and play without a disc)? or what is hte purpos of the mod on a gamecube. if it is to get your gamecube to play backups how do you mak backups of gamecube games. any and all information will be greatley appriciated? thanks.
Modchips for GameCube at this time are simply so you can burn games/homebrew apps and play them on the GameCube, with a disc. You download the games online, or rip them yourself, and then burn them, and play them with your modded 'Cube. Some N64 games also work (if burned properly, with the proper emulator), and on most chips all SNES and NES games work (if burned properly, with the proper emulator again). Besides gaming, there aren't many uses... there is an app currently to play MP3s, and with a good amount of extra hardware you can run a version of Linux on GameCube.
Also, apparently some groups of homebrewers are looking into a way to cheaply mass produce hard drives for the GameCube, for backup purposes again. However, no specifics have been announced, so it will be at least a few months - probably much longer - before this becomes reality, if it ever does.
