hello, not sure if this is the appropriate location for this question, but I couldn't find a networking forum section...

I have comcast internet, and a netgear wireless gateway that I rent from them.

The internet connection works fine where it is located right now in my office room. I need to move the gateway to the bedroom where my desktop with NO wireless capabilities is located.

When I move it to the other room, the gateway is unable to connect to the internet... I get a message from vista saying that it's a LOCAL connection... in the networking section, I can see my gateway, I can see other computers on my home network... That's about it, no internet access... when I click diagnose and repair, windows finds no problems with the connection...

I could be wrong but it seems to some type of DNS error because when I run the command in command prompt, it says unable to find comcast.com etc. etc. etc.

How can I fix this? stupid comcast said it'll be 30 dollars for a technician to come out... I want to avoid this if possible, because their technicians are bone heads anyway

I think the internet signal is only coming to one jack, I do dsl support its different, but sometimes we filter the signal outside so only one jack gets DSL if there is some kind of interference or some other issue. Its sounds like they are doing the same thing if it works fine on one jack but not at they other one. call your isp and see.

hey thx for the response man. I didn't want them to send a tech because they're going to charge me for nonsense work...

Based on what you said, I decided to go into my attic and have a look. They do indeed have a different type of splitter going into the jack that works correctly with my internet.

I simply swapped out wire locations and presto, it works the way I needed to!

thanks for the advice, it helped :)
