My old laptop was stolen it had a dvd-rw. The insurance company replaced it with a new laptop with a cd-rw/dvd-r combi (in error) but paid for an upgrade to a dvd-rw. Before I had the dvd-rw fitted all video formats played fine - since the dvd-rw was fitted they are all (avi,mpg,wmv etc) jerky - the player used seems to make no difference - neither does the source - dvd/cd, hard drive or my big LaCie drive. My codecs are a complete mess - I downloaded loads in an effort to get one particular video to play. Help - where do I start? Tony
My screensaver clicked in whilst I was running a file comparison - it too was 'jerky' and seemed to always 'stutter' when the disc light flashed - does this point to a more basic system problem? Tony
if you are running xp hit cntrl-alt-del and give me cpu ussage at idle and number of processes runing
At idle my CPU% is zero and I have 51 processes. I've also tried this in Safe Mode - when I have CPU% and 14 processes - but I still get jerky playback even in Safe Mode! Tony
Check for an updated graphics driver was any extra software installed when they changed the rom check your bios the size of your video ram may be adjustable it should be under warranty take it back to the supplier if simple things dont work
Will the DMA stuff mentioned above be applicable to all media playback - even from my hard disk or LaCie disk? I've updated my driver from version 4291 to 4497. Still get jerky playback. How do I update my bios video ram size. Graphics is a Mobile Intel 915GM/GMS, 910 GML EXPRESS CHIPSET tONY
When I'm playing media on an otherwise idle system should my cpu %age be all over the place - it does seem that the stutter happens when my cpu% shoots up from 7% to 30-90+%? Tony
dma will efect roms and hdd but not your external video ram size sometimes can be adjusted in your computers bios check your manual for the prcedure what is the brand model and specs of your laptop
