First things first, everyone knows that windows XP has Windows Movie Maker included with the system, but does anyone have any reccommendations or reviews for other programs? I'm going to the Art Institute of Atlanta with a major in Digital Media Production (Dachelor's Degree in Video Production), so I need a pretty decent movie editing program. I heard that Adobe Premiere is a pretty good program. I'm running Windows XP with a P4 HT 3.0GHz with 512 MB of RAM (Soon to be 1.5GHz by next week. So, if any of you have ideas, I'm open to them. Thanks!

Premier is a good program and Sony Vegas is also good. If you are going to need a reasonably priced solution that includes DVD authoring you might be better off with Vegas (you can get a package that includes editing, MPEG encoding, AC-3 encoding, and DVD authoring for less than $1000). Premiere, OTOH, is nice when you have a third party encoder because they typically come with Premiere plugins to avoid an intermediate rendering step. To augment either one of those programs I'd recommend looking into AviSynth (free).

Cool, cool, cool. Thanks for the input. I think the only movie editing program I've ever used so far is Windows Movie Mker, which probally nothing compared to these programs. I downloaded a 30 day trial for Premiere Pro 1.5 but haven't installed it yet. I'm going to wait until I actually get my raw footage before I install the trial. Any idea if you can get trial for the Vegas program before you buy it?

    Thanks

Cool. I'll check that out. I've just gotten started. (laughs) I started on October 3, 2005. Right now I'm taking basic classes (Video 101, Art 101). To answer you question, it seems like it's going to be a pretty neat course, but we haven't done much yet. The teacher is just trying to get us used to the camera and all of that stuff. The actual movie editing classes come later in time. Don't know when exactly. I've got at least 3 years to go to school, maybe 4 if I take the summer off. Just figured I'd try to get a head start of the work.

There are also other Some very good editors out there like "AviD Xpress Pro" or "Canopus Edius" or "Pinnacle Liquid Edition" You might also want to invest in a Hardware Capture device so you Can use Analogue Video in your Digital editing Projects and also Invest in a Lot of Disk Space as Digital video Takes up a LOT of Disk Space.....

I graduated From Broadcasting school about 4 years ago(3 year Cource) and we also had to do a Lot of Video editing but back then there wasn"t a Lot of editing Programs arround Like today and Most of the effects were hardware Based so we had to share editing Workstations were now everyone can have there own Video editing studio"s Built into there LapTop or PC so you should find everything a Lot easier and More Fun than i did when I went to School.....

    Cheers

First of all Minion, nice system! As for the disk space: got plenty of it.

1 Western Digital 80GB External Hard Drive
1 Seagate 160GB External Hard drive
1 Seagate 200GB External Hard drive
1 Internal 200GB SATA Internal Drive

I think I have a fairly decent amount of disk space, but as far as I'm concerned, there's no limit. I know I have room for 2 more internal hard drives. My biggest problem is money now. It turns out that I can only run 1GB of memoey, not 1.5GB. Apparently my processor will not let me run a 333MHz and a 400MHz. Oh well. Hello Ebay!

I recently Picked up a full Gig of Samsung Dual Chanell DDR400 on E-Bay for $90 Canadian ($75 US) which is a Pretty Damn Good deal so I am sure you can Find a simular Deal if you Look.....

And Yes you do seem to have a Lot Of Disk space accept that you Might Find that USB Drives are a Little Slow Compared to ATA/133 or SATA Drives but it should be OK For Video Capture.....

    Cheers

Yea. U have no argument from me there. My primary computer used to be a laptop so I didn't have much of a choice. The USB drives were the only option. I should have enough space to last me for a little while. As for the memory, I found a 1GB for a $100 at newegg.com. I'm bound to buy some more later.

I got one more question for you about importing footage from MiniDV. I've got about 3 minutes i need to import, so i was wondering if you have any idea how big the file would be. I've heard somewhere around 228 megs for minute, so any input would be helpful. Thanks!

I couldn"t tell you exactly how big But You get about 20 minutes in a 4gb AVI file so that works out to about 200mb per Minute of Video so for 3 Minutes I estimate the file size being between 600mb and 700mb......

    Cheers

Hey folks. I got a question for you. Ya'll have been helpful thus far and I realize that this is a bit off topic, but I'm hoping that you can give me some input. To put it simply, I think my Firewire ports bit the just. Everything was working fine before. Then all of a sudden, they just went south. I was copying a file to a firewire connected drive eariler and I lost the transfer right in the middle. Now it will not reconize any of my drives when i connect them. The drives are fine because the USB reconizes them. It will not even reconize my MiniDV camera. How the hell am I gonna do my final now?

Any programs you know to scan my computer to see if my ports are screwed? Thanks.

I suggest that you go into your Device manager and Delete the Firewire Port and Uninstall it"s Driver and then restart your PC and let it reinstall the Firewire Port and it"s Drivers and then see if it now works.....

If that doesn"t work and in Netwok Connections the Firewire Port shows a Problem then the Ports could just be Fried in which case you might have to install a New firewire Card which should be pretty Cheap and Easy to do as I bought a 3 Port Firewire Card on E-Bay a while Back for $2.50 and was easy to install.....

You might also try opening up the Hard Drive enclosure and Takeing the Drive out and Installing it inside your PC (That is if you have the Room in your case and Have the IDE/SATA Connections which you should unless you allready have a Case Full of Hard Drives)....

    Good Luck

PS: If there is some problem with the Hardware or Driver there should be a Yellow Question Mark or Red X next to your Firewire Connection in your "Device Manager".......

That's where it gets even stranger... The device manager shows no problems. But no matter what the heck I do it doesn't reconize anything I plug into it. It's not the frive I used or the MiniDV camera becasue they both work on my laptop's connection. And, to top it off, the computer is only about 2 months old. Wonder if warranty covers that? I'll try your suggestions though. Thanks.

It aggravates me because now I have to capture my video on my laptop and transfer it to my desktop...what an inconveience(?). Anyway...no matter what that unless i can get the firewire port taken care of I'm screwed...

I believe the easiest thing to do would be to Open up the Hard Drive enclosure and Take the Drive out and Install it in your PC...

Hard Drives are Simple to install and you will get much faster Transfer Rates when connected Via IDE or SATA.....

Other than that I would say to install a new Firewire Card....

    Cheers
