I recently had a Pioneer 112d die on me =(. It was the best burner i've ever had. So, I purchased a Pioneer 116d thinking it would be just as great. Not the case. I use dual layer verbatims made in singapore. Never had a single failure on my 112d, couldn't get a single one to finish a burn on the 116d. I don't know if I just got a defective drive or what, but my setup is the same and nothing changed except for the burner. So I got a plextor, it burns, but on my 8x verbatims, it will only burn at 2.4x. This is no good as the 112d would write all the way at 8x reliably. So I am looking for a drive that will burn my dual layer verbatims at atleast 4x. I wanted to get another 112d but can't find one for sale anywhere. The burner needs to be an internal ide drive so that I can put it into an external firewire case. I a iMac user and don't have the option to put it in my mac. I also can't use a SATA burner. So, please, anyone out there that can recommend a good burner to get the job done?
Question would probably get better answers Mac forum since I have a 116D in my PC and it works flawlessly at 8x. Why can't you use a SATA burner if you're putting it in a Firewire case?
My cases I have are only IDE, no SATA interface in the external firewire case. I figured i'd post this here since burners are pretty much universal.
I don't think that your problems are necessarily a product of your choice of DVD burner if you are having that many problems with different brand drives. Every brand drive that you have listed Is a quality drive and should burn at rated speeds. The last IDE drive that I used was a Sony Optiarc that could burn 16x rated Verbatims at 12-16x with no problems.
I'm open to ideas as to what the problem could be then. As I said, I had a Pioneer dvr-112, burned the same verbatim discs I use now, same batch even, at up to 8x with not a single coaster. The only thing I changed in the lineup was the dvd burner, to the 116d, 3 of the same discs gave errors midway through the burning process. Then I switch to a plextor burner, and now it burns perfect, however is limited to 2.4x on the same discs. The only thing that points me to it being a dvd burner problem is the fact that the only thing i've changed in my setup is the burner.
Something I would consider based On direct experience. Bad batch/run of media. I recently had a spindle of Taiyo Yuden that had 20+ bad discs out of a sequence of 30. I have used over 400 of these discs previously and 200 since with no problems, just that bunch.
I'm using Dual Layer Verbatims made in Singapore. I've burned over 200 of them without a single failure. I had a 20 pack I was working with, had 10 or so discs left in that back when I switched from the 112d burner to the 116d burner. 3 in a row failed in the 116d. I had 7 left from the same pack. Once I got the plextor, all 7 burned perfectly, but only at 2.4x. I've since started on a new pack, all of which still only burn at 2.4x, but no failures. This is the only thing that points me to it not being bad media.
Just a heads up to anyone who wanted to help me with my problem. I solved my issues by finally finding a place that still stocks the pioneer dvr-112d burner. All is well again, same disks are burning perfect in my new 112d burner. Thank you dailun for your assistance.
