I have been playing games on my pc and unfortunately after a few minutes my system reboots itself.The games are brothers in arms and medal of honour airbourne. I have graphic card Gforce 8500,4 gig of RAM and an athlon 64 X2 dual core 6000 3,22GHz. After the system has rebooted i do get an error up and some files description of the crash. But it means nothing to myself.This is what the system says caused the crash- C:\Windows\Minidump\122309-20968-01.dmp C:\Users\Valued Customer\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-1864390-0.sysdata.xml I have windows 7 now but it was doing the same fault before i upgraded from Vista 32 bit. Has anybody any ideas of the description above,much appreciated.
I can confirm that the fan on the card is spinning.I have also just updated driver for this 8500 card,my son then tried to play MOH airbourne,it lasted 5 minutes then rebooted itself.
Dont know whether this information would help,but i loaded the old battlefield 1942 game on it and me son played on it for 2 hours,with no reboots??????ITs still a toss up between the graphic card and main chip?? Apart from rebooting when i am playing the newer games it works fine with no known errors.
what are the videocard requirements for the games? do you have or can borrowa similar card to see if reboot still happens?
The card i have should work no problems with these games,it used to when i first bought the pc.The warranty only finished 2 weeks ago on the pc ,am gutted. Wonder if its worth downloading new directx.How do i know what version i have and how would i know what version to download,although this is probably not the problem. Thanks.
When the pc reboots itself and starts up i get a microsoft error alert and it then asks me to find out more info,at this point and am then directed to view these 2 files.This is just after is says "windows has recovered from a serious problem(after reboot). I will play a game this morning and see if i can get anymore information on this error. I do get the blue-crash screen just as it shuts down,again though i only get this when playing newer games. MOre information to follow-when i get it thanks.
Sometimes the BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) goes by pretty quickly, but it always contains an Error Code. If you can read it, this Error Code might help us figure out what it doesn't like. Dick
Yeah thanks for that ,but it does like you say disappear very quick.I have windows 7 and i am still learning with it.Is there not someway were i can go into the control panel-administrator tools and look for system crashes.Its just a thought,there maybe a log in here of errors etc. Help appreciated. As much as I would like to think Windows 7 (and all the rest of them) should give you an easy way to reference past crashes, I don't believe there is a way to do that. Tell you what, load a command prompt (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt). Then enter "cd c:\windows\minidump" to change directories and then enter "dir" to get a list of the files there. From your first message this looks like where Windows is storing its crash dumps. If you find a bunch of .dmp files there, go ahead and take a look at one of them. Try entering "more 122309-20968-01.dmp" (this should be the first dump file you mentioned) and see if the contents make any sense or if you can perhaps paste the first dozen or so lines into a message here. Just waiting for it to crash when we don't know why it is crashing could be a frustrating exercise. Dick
Yes you were correct there was no error links in this dump file,i tried this in command prompt but nothing there. We had the pc on all day to do a test ,the game in question Medal of honour "airbourne",was on for an hour maybe two,then tonight my son told me he went to jump in gameplay and the pc rebooted.This also happened when went to throw a granade during gameplay.So from here this information tells us that is rebooting on certain commands and actions. Sorry i cant give you any information on error messages. If you have a software failure of windows or other software,am i right in thinking this is when you do get an error message.If you have a hardware failure sometimes if the PC reboots you dont get an error message.????This is just a guess..

I would imply from these that he has a desktop/tower with a video card. The key to both questions is "sometimes" and "not necessarily." A big problem here is the relatively random nature of the re-boots. In some cases you said it could occur after only a few minutes and then today it took your son several hours. Several hours could point to a heat problem. A few minutes could point to a software problem. Either one could point to a hardware problem. Do you have access to a different graphics card you could swap in? @ddp, any thoughts? I'm starting to run out of ideas. Dick
Dick i think you have this correct reference heat.lastnight we noticed that from time/time the chip fan seem to start working really hard,ie as though is was increasing in speed.I took the fan of to clean(you can imagine the heatsink was covered in dust),when removing the fan ,the fan/chip fell off ,and i mean literally "fell off".I also noticed the heat transfer compound has dried up also,so i have re-installed the chip back into its socket and made sure its is properly clamped in.Covered the chip with the compound and put the fan back on. We played this game that was causing the reboot for an hour and all was well.I will get the boys to play on it all today to give it a further test. I will let you know how we get on later today. BRAVO! A bunged up fan assembly could certainly cause all of the symptoms you were experiencing. Here's hopping the application of a little TLC and appropriate repair components can bring the unit back to a full and fruitful life. Dick one final question. Does this mean even with windows 7(the now super duper windows)you dont always get a error message on superious reboots etc.I was always lead to believe that windows support always give you a error code if the PC was not shutdown correctly.???? It is supposed to and the information on the crash is supposed to be contained in those two files you are referred to when your system recovers from a crash. The next time it crashes try to locate that .dmp file and see if it contains any useful information. That's where it *should* be. Best of luck and Happy New Year. Dick
