please help hey ive had problems with my pc booting up. im runing windows vista home basic 32bit. the problem started when my computer froze so i turned it off from the outside power switch (i know, your not suppose to do that). after a couple of hours i turned it on and it got to the part where it loads windows, then the computers restarts its self again, and continues to go threw that process. so i ran a memory diagnostic and that didnt come up with anything. i also tried to boot into safe mode and that failed as well. so then i put in the windows cd and tried to do a system boot repair, which took 8 hours and decided to cancel that. after that i tried to re-install windows, it took multiple attempts of freezing at 0 percent to finally re-install, but when it booted it just came to a black screen and was stuck there till i rebooted with Ctrl+alt+delete . i also have a program on a cd that completely wipes the hard drive so i put that in there so see if that would wipe it clean but it freezes after 1 percent and wont budge. so thats where i am now, i can reach the bios and change settings and can boot from a cd and thats about it. is my hard drive fried?, or possibly the mother board?
If you've run Memtest86 and encountered no problems, then it's probably either the drive or the motherboard at fault. Do you have any means to test the hard drive, e.g. in someone else's PC, or in an external enclosure?
i have 2 sticks of 1 gig each and i actually just bought 1 stick of 2gigs that i just put in and the problem started just around that time. im going to take it out and start it up.
So I took out the new stick of 2gig ram and tried to boot the computer, no luck there and then I tried to reinstall windows and and the process ran smooth but didn't complete be didn't work any better. Also for the past 2 weeks or so I've been hearing some noises come from the pc like if a cd was being scratched and I didn't think anything of it cause it went away but now I'm starting to think my hd is fried and not the motherboard cause I can enter the bios with no problem. Is there any sujestion that anyone would have? I still haven't transferex the hd into another comp and tested it but I'm defanitly going to do that tomorrow I'll keep you guys posted. Your help is very appreciated!!!!!!!
I have an idea use the utility tools for the hdd and run tests on it if u do not have the disk u can go to the hdd manufacture website and download them on your other pc and create a boot disk if the drive is ok and u do not mind loosing everything on the drive zero the drive u can do only part or all of the drive depending on the size. resetup the drive and try reinstalling windows good luck
am i going to take the hd from my bad computer and replace it with the one in my good comp or am i just going to add it to the computer as a second hd???
Man just slave your second HDD and see if the machine would read its contents, if it does then the HDD is just fine. Or else make it the master since it has the OS and see if the machine will boot fine. The failure to this two options will indicate a problem with your HDD.
ngamla77, unless his bad pc uses the same chipset then windows might barf & do a blue screen of death. that will not indicate a problem with the drive as it is software related.
yah I tend to think of a software related issue. Don`t you thing Vista is the course as it is in most cases. I really go for XP.
Of all of Vista's shortcomings, instability isn't one of them. It is far more likely to be a driver or hardware error.
wish people would update us could there be some sort of 'solved' mark on threads? i come here mostly to read lol and solved threads would be a good resource
