So ive got a movie which is movie.xvid (700 megs) and the subtitle file that came with it is movie.avi.sub (61 kb).

What program do I use to put these two files together?

    thanks,
    steve

what you want to do is rename the .sub file exactly the same as your movie file except leave out the extension so heres an example:
    Full Metal Alchemist.avi
    Full Metal Alchemist.sub
So when you play the movie the the subs will automatically play.
Windows Media Player, BS Player thats what ive used
As for joining the 2 files together, id just leave it the way they are its easier but if you want to then use divx2dvd the newer versions allow you to burn subs into your movie, never tryed newer version so it works out for yah.

    Thanks,
I converted the .sub to .srt which DIVXtoDVD wanted and then I changed the name of the movie and the .srt file so they were the same and then I converted and burned and still no sub titles.

They work when I just watch the movie on Windows Media Player but not on the actual burnt DVD?

    help...

So heres how I hard coded subs into an AVI:

    1. Used VobSub --> Subresync to save the .sub to .srt
    2. Converted the Avi to Mpeg2 with WinAvi 6.3
    3. Opened the Mpeg2 in DVDLab pro and it had to be demuxed into the video and audio streams.
    4. Open the .srt file in DVDLab Pro and generate it into .sp1 to be coded in sync with the timecode of the movie.
    5. Compile DVD option in DVDLab Pro will align the timecoded subs with the movie and throw it all together in DVD ready files to burn.
    6. Burn the compiled files onto a DVD.

A lot of screwing around but once you figure it all out it is pretty automated and straight forward. Post any questions and I'll try to answer them!!

Thanks for any and all help,
    Steve

    smil27,

it's strange, but I do the same what you mention from point 4 on, and I have non-permanent subtitles. That is I can toggle them on-off as desired. You do not have them "hard-coded", hardcoding is when you have them all the time on the movie.

    K0k0m0,

When you click on the blue Sub 1 button in DVDLab pro, there is a radio button there in the top right of the window --> Set this Subtitle always ON by default.

I forgot to mention to click that in my instructions. my apologies

    Q&A

how do you open the mpeg in dvd lab?
Answer: Bottom left --> theres a open file icon for Importing files, just click this and find your mpeg.

    how do i Demux it?
Answer: It will tell you when you open the mpeg that it needs to be seperated (demuxed) into seperate video and audio streams. just click Ok or yes, its fairly automated.

how do you open the srt file in dvd lab?
Answer: in the top right window where it says "Movie 1" click on the Blue tab that says Sub 1, click on import button and find your srt file.

how do i then generate it to sp1?
Answer: then click on Generate Subtitle Stream. It will want u to name it first (yourmovie.sp1) keep this the same name as the mpeg file.

    Hope this helps!

    please clarify,

when you say "...but when it opened it it came up with an error messsage " when what opened up where?

unless the mpeg2 file didnt demux properly or the subs didnt generate then it should have burnt properly

    maybe try it again

not sure on that one, but you should have converted the AVI to Mpeg2 (what DVDLabpro recommends for best quality) in Win AVi 6.3.

    Best DVD compliant resolutions are:

    NTSC: 720 x 480
    PAL: 720 x 576

And if you're movie is not MPEG-2, then DVDLab Pro will not do any further encoding

Is there absolutely no other way to attach my subtitles to the movie to burn it?

I have a .avi movie and a .str subtitle, I want it burned onto DVD, and I can't count how many program trials/downloads I've done in the past month and been unsuccessful.

theres probably other ways to do this with an avi. and .srt file but by following my instructions above, this seems to be the easiest way because most of it is pretty much automated. follow the instructions exactly and you wont have a problem.
