i plugin my 140gig western digital hard drive and it just freezes at the beggining when i start my comp when it checks for video card then it heats up intensivley like not boiling hot but pretty damn hot. i hope i didnt burn it out because i cant access it and i have a lot of data i need on that. is there any way or anything i can buy program/hardware to recover that data from that harddrive help greatly appreciated

    thanks a lot

Ok enable S.M.A.R.T in your bios and post if it says anything. Try a different machine too i.e plug it into a different machine. If its dead we may have to try some more radical solutions to get your data as i have been there once.

Also make sure your jumpers are set properly on your hard drive for Slave Master. Remove any dvd, cd drives and just have ONLY the hard drive in too make sure you try all of these.

ok well if it does the same in another machine then its either dead or dying dont power it up much it may be on its last legs.

What youll need to do to back it up is get a copy of norton ghost or another program that will fully and 100% backup everything on it.

Is it possible for you to use maybe another hd and install windows on that the boot the computer up and use your dead drive as a secondary one? Or does it not let you past the POST with that hard drive connected?

Also first check your warranty on the unit they may be able to recover your data for you if it needs repaired or replaced under warranty, if its still under warranty just leave it alone and notify western digital go to there site etc.

If its not then to recover your data you may have to send it to a specialist or if youd prefer not to spend about $330 then you could do it the cheap way and put it in an air cealed bag leave it overnight for about 24 hours in a fridge and then connect it back up to recover the data beofore it breaksdown.

Yes i know it sounds crazy bit i can assure you ive done it before i was told this by sombody and when my 40gig HD packed in i managed to recover all my data before it died completely.

Good Luck My friend your going to need it

Bare in mind that the secondary hd must be large enough in capacity to back up all of your data im not sure how much that is though but im sure you will know roughly.

get a hd cooler fan(s) or if possible place the hd behind the front case fan(s) if they are there. check in the advanced section(?) to see if S.M.A.R.T. is there but is probably disabled so enable it if you want, my preference i don't on my drives.

ok thanks for the ideas sound a little risky . I just want to lay out the whole situation. when i put it as a master by itself on a good computer it heats up, the computer freezes at the startup screen(the black screen when it checks the video card right when u start up the comp). When i set it as a slave with diffrent hard drive as a master it does the same thing. i have norton ghost i dont want the whole hdd backup just some things but it dosnt matter. I do have another computer i can hook up the dead hard drive up to on so that is an option. the dead hdd has been unplugged for days now and left alone. if u can tell me step by step prosedure would be good

    thanks

if drive freezes the computer in both slave & master than might be sol on the info. do you know anybody with an external hd than you can use to place the sick drive in. try the fridge suggestion as it can't hurt to try anything to get the info.
