my tv also only plays up to 1080i. how does the picture using a hd dvd player or blu ray compare to using an upconverter?

HD-DVD or Blu-Ray that all you need, these two compared to upconverter not even something anyone can debate on.

Not at the optimal viewing distance(s) for a 27 inch (4:3 or 16:9).

Your set is only capable of 720p or 768p output although it can except a signal up to 1080i resolution. Standard-Def and High-Def look similar on small screens. HDTV is really a big screen technology and makes watching a large screen more enjoyable.

    Hi diabolos,
My tv is the Sony HDTV KF-E50A10.I
understand that it will accept both
    a 720P and 1080I signal but only
    displays a 720P( 768P) image.My
question is, will for example, the
Toshiba HD A2 really give that
MUCH GREATER PQ for my standard dvd"s
than my Toshiba upconverting SD-4980 set
    at 720P ?
    Thank You for any help

I just contacted Sony live chat to verify
that my Sony KF-E50A10 will display both
    the 720P and 1080i image.
