I've got a quick format question for anyone who might know I know that H.264 is probably the optimum format for viewing HD on your PC, but, is it the only format? For example when you get a AVI file that says it's HD is it really the HD standard,or was it just converted from HD? Can something be HD if it's in AVI or MPEG4 format?
HD simply refers to the resolution being 720p or higher. Usually with an avi it would say HDTV and that refers to the source. H.264 is just the ITU designation for MPEG-4 Part 10 aka AVC, so it is MPEG-4 and you could store it in an avi container. HD can be any format though AVC or VC-1 will probably be the most common.
