n general there are two classes of DVDs, those that are less than 4.36GB and those greater than that size. They are commonly refered to as DVD5 (for the smaller) and DVD9 (for the larger). For DVD5 discs, have a look at http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/small_dvd_2_dvdr.cfm to help you back it up and for DVD9s, have a look at http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd9_to_dvdr_with_dvd_shrink.cfm

You can determine which category your DVD falls into by either using DVDDecryptor ( http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_decrypter.cfm ) or SmartRipper ( http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/smartripper.cfm ) or alternatively, looking up your movie here: http://www.afterdawn.com/tools/dvd_layer.cfm

    :)
