Hello, I would like some advice on what aspects to watch out for when buying a new HDTV. A colleague of mine wants to buy a new HDTV (true FullHD 1080p). His criteria: - Neotion/Snit module (=FullHD) - HDMI ports (though I don't see why you would need more than two) - Very beautiful, powerful image with true blacks - 42"/50" - Reliable support (service) His knowledge: - Completely novice His budget: 1000 euro (1361 USD, 1344 CAD) Things I have read about to watch out for so far: - floating/rising blacks - must be true hd (not letterbox-res or 1080i) - plasmas consume a lot/get hot/colors burned (fix: correct calibration?) Deadline: - tomorrow (we're going to go buy it tomorrow) He already has his eyes on an advertised 'Samsung Plasma P50C550' which is being displayed in the supermarket now for 999 euro. The thing about LED LCD's is that a lot of them have this glossy finish, so they can be very reflective. Plasmas seem to be getting better with the reflections, LED LCD seem to be getting worse if manufactures keep using that crap glossy, finger smudging, edge to edge glass instead of the old and better matte finish. That being said, if you are only going to be watching TV and movies, Plasmas are great to get. But if you’re going to throw in some gaming, go with an LED LCD. Yes Plasma's have anti-burn in protection, but a lot still give image retention with is still annoying. Also I would advise to stay away from 3D just for a while. That technology is still being improved. Samsung and Panasonic are usually hand in hand with quality. Sony had fallen asleep for a while, but they've been coming back. So almost any TV from these three close to your budget will do you good. The best thing to do is to just go to a store and see the quality in person, but keep an eye out for Samsung, Pansonic, and Sony when you do.
