man i hope someone here can help me.i just bought the optorite +/- burner from the web from $130 and all i can get it to do is play.i have an hp pavilion xt840 1.1gig celeron running winme(please no winme jokes,if you get rid of the startup bs it's as good as win98)the hp has a cd burner in it and i tried to install the dvd first as a slave(both the cd and dvd are on the same ribbon)then as master with the cd slave, then both on cable select, and always the same problem.the cd burns fine no matter which way i set it,and the dvd plays dvds fine, but when i try to burn cds or dvds with the dvd burner the data only seems to get to the burner in short burst for a few minutes during which gold5 or easycd says it will take around 452 hours to burn a 500 meg disc followed by either one of these errors---hard disc error-please run scandisc-atapi error-please change your master/slave settings.i'm clueless on what to due.when i go to c/control/system/device manager everything looks fine.but no matter whether i've got it in slave or master all i get is short bursts from my harddrive when i try to burn.yet the old crappy cd burner the pc came with burns no prob.if i don't find somebody to tell me what i'm doing wrong i'm gonna have to take it to the shop and that's 60 bucks i can't afford right now.when it comes to pc's i'm still a newbe on hardware and just slightly more knowledgeable on software,so if you can explain it simply maybe i won't fry my self on the wrong wire--lol-pleasee help---kevin

Well put your CD writer as primary slave and your DVD burner as secondary master. I suggest you remove the CD burner for a while and put your DVD burner as secondary slave. Make sure you set the jumpers OK (at the back of the drive).

If you don't know about these, you better ask professional help.

You need to set your Optorite as secondary Master and then put CD writer as secondary slave. Make sure that the jumpers are set accordingly.

Your HD's should always go on the primary IDE cable and never on the secondary (cause's data loss). Once all this has been set up, you need to reinstall the drivers for the DVD/CD drives and install the latest ASPI drivers for thes drives to run on.

If this solves the problem, then you don't need to update your Firmware in your Optorite. It would be as-well if you did update your firmware as the optorite carn't write at 4x with its retail firmware installed. I had to flas to v1.16 so that I could write at 4x on my DD0203.

    Good luck :D
