I've been backing up my DVDs for a while now using Ripit4me-FixVTS-DVDDecrypter-DVDShrink-ImgBrn-etc with great success. The only nagging thing and uncertainty I have is with subtitles. I never know if I'm gonna get 'em.

When the dvd can fit onto a single layer dvd-r between 90%-100% compression, I let DVD shrink do the compressing and backing the "full" dvd, with all menus, functions, etc. If its has to compress it more than, then I re-author and simply I break up the dvd into to single layer discs. Whenever I re-author, I never get the menus... I just don't how to do that yet (if it is even possible). It simply become a title by title, chapter by chapter dvd.

    When I don't re-author... I hasn't experienced any problem with subtitles.

BUT... when I have to re-author... this is where subtitles get iffy.

I always mark the English subs checkbox (in dvd shrink). In the past, the english subs didn't appear anyway. Which was fine... I really didn't want it. Then I came across Crash (Sandra Bullock). This time, this english subs does appear during playback, which I really didn't want. I tried another backup again and did include subs... and no subs during playback. Great! I just should not include subs from now on!

    Wrong!

Then I came across Da Vinci Code. When I don't include the subs... I don't get the english subtitles for the "french" scenes of the movie. I tried backing up again and this time with all the subs, I discovered that i get the english subs for the "french" scenes.

So I'm confused... is there a way to do it so that I always get english subs ONLY when it is necessary... like when there are foreign language and english subs for those scenes... like that way you'd normally view it on the original?

My more recent problem is Babel... on this backup, I don't get any subs regardless if I include the subs during backup or not. And this movie, like Da Vinci Code, has foreign language in it and english subs for those scenes. Both times, I chose to re-author... I guess I can try NOT re-authoring it and see if it gets the subs.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, when u reauthor a movie with shrink, and hit the reauthor button, you get to a screen where u have to drag over from r to l the file ( usually the main movie ) you want. then click the compression tab next to the dvd browser tab. Here click on which audio tracks you want to keep as well as which subtitle(s) you want to keep. Hit back up and away u go. Merry Christmas.

    That's exactly what I do...

And I'm telling you that when I INCLUDE all subs in the backup when re-authoring (as you described), the outcome of the playback varies.

    For example:

Crash: English subs appear throughout the playback
Da Vinci Code: English subs appear ONLY during french scene.
Babel: No subs what so ever.

So I'm trying to understand if there's a way to make it consistent.
Perhaps the answer is that, "there's no answer... it's trial and error", which I hope is not the case.
