Don't know much about upgrading PC's, so I'll try to explain as best I can. I'm looking to upgrade the present processor I have in my PC which is a Intel Celeron 1.7GHz. I was looking at maybe a Celeron 2.4 or 2.6. The motherboard I have is a IM845GL, if that means anything to anybody. The book states it will take an "Intel Pentium 4 Processor in the mPGA 478 pin package". This doesn't mean much to me. What I'd appreciate knowing is which chip should I buy. I realise the Pentium 4 is a better chip than the Celeron, but I'm lost as to which chip I should buy. I've seen loads of Celeron chips for sale on ebay, but the description always states, make sure it is the correct chip for your motherboard, as there is no refunds. I just don't want to go and buy a chip that might not work. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
What brand computer do you have? The IM845GL refers to the chipset on your motherboard http://www.intel.com/design/chipsets/845gl/?iid=search& As for a processor I would not buy on E Bay!Also before buying you should really find out the maker of your motherboard.Different boards support different speed CPU's depending on the BIOS.Check out these links http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-116-188&depa=0 http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-116-188&depa=0 Do some more research before buying it will save you a lot of Headaches.
also check for bios update as board might not run newer chip, ran into that when trying 2.4 celeron d while i have c version that works but d version doesn't post
Thanks for your replies guys and the links wild77. Trouble is, I'm more confused than ever now. I was hoping it was just a case of taking the 1.7 out and replacing it with either the 2.4 or the 2.6. Seems not. Thanks anyway.
Can anyone tell me how I can found out the maker of the motherboard on my PC. I've got the user guide for the board, but all it says on the cover is IM845GL Motherboard. Can't find anything inside it either.
there is no info printed on motherboard like mine has p4vxasd2+ printed on it. is computer a name brand or a clone
its a name brand just a low end at that. what is model # on tower so can see if get info on motherboard
I'm just looking at the front of the tower and all it says is emachine 270. Should I be looking elsewhere?
There is a plate on the back of the PC. For Model No it says Emachine 270. The PC is nearly 3 years old so I'm wondering if they list it anymore.
I found a web-site which supports the eMachine 270. It seems to have an Imperial Motherboard though I don't know which one yet as there are several. Have you heard of this board?
Apparently it only supports these processors: 1.3 400MHz 256KB 1.4 400MHz 256KB 1.5 400MHz 256KB 1.6 400MHz 256KB 1.7 400MHz 256KB 1.8 400MHz 256KB 1.9 400MHz 256KB 2.0 400MHz 256KB Might be time to buy another board. But which one? What boards will fit my case? Its so complicated.
suggest get a new case that is expandable that is as cheap as $29Can with 350watt psu & 2 usb in front. gut out emachine for floppy, hd, cd/dvdrom drives, ram(maybe if fit new board) & cards & put into new board & case, than sell off emachine or keep for just in case
