well you did get jipped my friend, because as you are discovering about 2% of all software out there is for mac, everything else is for PC. For photo editing, there is Adobe Photoshop, and there are a FEW p2p apps, but thats about it. If I were you I'd return that P.O.S. overpriced, underpowered thing and get a PC.

ok.. being a mac person. there is nothing really free out there..

irfanview-type program for mac os x
[bold]what does this do? what type of program is this?[/bold]
    edit:
    found this:
    http://www.irfanview.com/

as the quick points on the website:

VIEW: view pics? you can open that up with no problem
    CONVERT: convert what?
SCAN & PRINT: you can use iphoto...
    CREATE SLIDESHOWS: again.. iphoto
    BATCH PROCESSING: of what files?
PLAY MOVIES & SOUND: movies.. quicktime, sound: itunes

and all this programs and things are part of the OS. ilife suite comes free in the ibook..

i should know.. i work selling macs.

    a great photo shop program
[bold]other than photshop for mac.. not much really. there is iphoto that comes with the macs now. but nothing that high end. again, you can use iphoto but with limited options[/bold]

    sharezza type program
    [bold]limewire, also torrents[/bold]

    a great anti-virus program
[bold]again, nothing free. but there normally isnt an issue with viruses or spyware for macs. but there is norton antivirus 10[/bold]

hope that helps... i do know that macs are used mainly for video editing, and audio recording.. so that's why the pros use it.

Tell me about it! I've been teaching audio production for almost 2 years now, and the only thing I dread about coming to work is having to use their damn G5's at school! Macs may work good for audio and video editing, but my PC runs Pro Tools and Avid Xpress Pro just as well as macs....which constantly makes me wonder why people think macs are so great. I don't mean to be adding fuel to the fire here, but anything a mac can do, a PC can do better.

Austink, there's a Photo shop similar program for Mac called Gimp. It's freeware: http://www.gimp.org/
If you want to use it, you must have X11's instaled (Applications -> Utilities -> X11) Is you haven't them installed, you can do it with your Tiger Installation DVD
You don't need anti-virus when using Mac OSX ;)

I've been using OS X for 4 years now and I haven't gotten one single virus/spyware/adware/trojan. But if you really need one there is this http://www.clamxav.com/
But I think if it does find a virus it would be a Windows one.
