I tried to connect a DSL modem/router "2701hg-s" to a cable modem through the DSL's ethernet ports in the back. I went to the DSL home page and changed the ip on the router from automatic and forgot the ip address i put in. Now i can't access the router's home page to recongigure it. If i wire it to my laptop or wirelessly it still doesn't go to it which was normally "gateway.2wire.net." Can anyone help me out? I'm using Windows Vista.

moved to correct forum as not a windows issue. get a proper router not a dsl modem router as that is your problem. can't hook 2 modems together.

Have you tried going to the command prompt and type ipconfig/all and look for the Default Gateway, then type the address in the browser.

press the reset button on back(?) of modem/router as it will put it back to factory defaults.

why are you trying to connect a dsl router modem to a cable modem? you need to connect to a wan/internet port on the dsl which you do not have from the cable modem. get a regular wired or wireless router to connect between cable modem & computer.

it has like 4 ethernet ports in the back. can't i just connect the ethernet wire that's coming from the modem to the back of the dsl modem/router and have that broadcast the wireless signal?

You don't need the Cable modem. The 2701HG device is a Modem & Router combined in one device so it'll take care of wired/wireless by itself.

    1) Get rid of the Cable modem.
    2) Connect the phone line to the back of the 2701HG DSL modem/router.
    3) Connect an Ethernet cable between the router and your laptop/PC. This must be done for configuration purposes & before you can use Wireless.
    4) Boot up your laptop/PC and launch your Internet browser. You should get directed to a page where you'll be presented with instructions.

yeah like he said i need the cable modem. it's not like the cable wire is going to connect to the dsl port which is for a phone line type of cable.

had already tried getting to those settings before on that link. already tried it guess there isn't much i can do but buy a wireless router with a wan port. the settings on that link were for that type of router only cause i think it's the only dsl router/modem with those capabilities. just trying to save some money but oh well.
