I just got a blu-ray drive and now I am ripping them to hard drive. I just noticed that the video is not as good as it could be. How do I know what my problem is. I figure it could be my power supply, graphics card (video card), or my cpu. Can someone help me to figure out what the problem is. The blu-ray's do play just not as clear as they should be. For example when I play the iso's on my macbook pro using boot camp and playing through windows on my hdtv in another room the video is crystal clear so I know I must be having some kind of issue.

It could be that your computer monitor or graphics cards are not up to the task of playing the HD videos. What kind of monitor and graphics card are you using?

There may be easier ways, but this is a way that works on most Windows systems...

Right-click on a blank area of your Desktop and then click on Properties. From Properties click on Settings. From Settings click on Advanced. From Advanced click on Adapter and what to your wondrous eyes should appear but full information about your graphics adapter.

If you can make it through that twisty path, you should find the information you need and then relay all of it to us. As a matter of fact, right next to the Adapter tab there should also be a Monitor tab which should also be able to convey more detailed information about your monitor.

It's always better to have too much information than not enough.

Let us know all of the information you circuitous journey found you.

I think the problem is your video card. It is old and does not have the ability to decode high definition video the same way the newer gpu in your mac can. Your best bet would be to get a new graphics card.

If you have agp this would be the cheapest upgrade

    this one would e faster

if you have pci e then this would be a better card

I'm not sure if I have AGP or PCI

Is there an easy way for me to know?

Cool I'll take a look it just a few. You don't think my cpu is dated and isn't powerful enough to process the video or is that all on the video card end?

Your cpu is old but as long as you have a good graphics card to do most of the work your cpu doesn't matter.

ok sweet. Those links you sent for cards seemed kind of cheap. I always thought video cards were really expensive. I don't really know I just kind of assumed. I'm not going to be doing any gaming on that pc so do you think those will do the job more than sufficiently or should I go to something a little more high end?

for watching high definition video those should be enough. You dont need a really high end card to do it. Just something recent with video offloading features to minimize cpu load.

    Thanks again!

Ok I got the video card that was your 3rd link down. I just tried to install it but when it is installing the device driver it fails and says...

    Standard VGA Graphics Adapter Failed

Do you know what is wrong?

I'm sorry. I'm retarted. I didn't see the installation cd that came with it. It was in the instruction book. I installed the cd and now it works flawlessly

My Lord, I am so glad I am not the only one who does stuff like that! In my day I have been known to carry such absurdities to unbelievable lengths: like hand-delivering my third return unit with much fan-fair to the factory service desk only to have the counter-man nonchalantly slip the install software out of the box I had just practically waved in his face. A customer-service agent can go through an entire career without having perfect moments handed to them like that.

Ya I felt pretty dumb. 9/10 times I usally never need the cd that comes with stuff. I usually just let the Internet do it. I don't even know why they hid the disc in the instruction booklet instead of just setting in the box. Oh well. Lol

Some naive production engineer probably had the mis-guided assumption people actually read the instructions. :D

I'm glad everything is working out.
