Help! Need a DVD-RW

I need to buy a DVD-RW to record some educational shows, but I'm not sure it'll do what I need it to do. I need to be able to put chapters/labels for each show I record. Am I able to do this with a DVD-/+RW? If so, will they appear on the start-up menu for the recorded DVD? Can I record several shows and then go back in at a later date and make these edits? Any suggestions on the best and most cost efficient one to buy? I'm looking at the Emerson EWR20V4 VCR/DVD Recorder Combo.

    Thanks a lot!

If you want to add menus, chapters and stuff, you need a dvd burner for your computer, not a standalone. Once you have the burner, the option of doing that, adding menus and chapters, it does not depend on your burner, but on the software that you use.
A good burner would be a Sony, Nec, Plextor, Benq, Liteon. And I think unless you buy an old, used one, most of them these days can burn onto RW discs, and you can actually buy some good ones for 40-50 dollars.

Thanks for the info! I need to make sure I'm following you though. . . I can't edit this on the actual recorder hooked up to my TV/Satellite? I'd have to burn it on the recorder, then transfer it to my computer and with right software, then I could edit it by adding chapters/etc...? Do you recommend software that works well? Ieks, it sounds time consuming! I have five kiddos and will have to do this for each of their educational programs.

Is there a stand alone that will edit it from the menu screen? Thanks for taking the time to expalin this to me! I'm so frustrated and pressed for time to figure this out. I really appreciate all of your wisdom!!!!! I admire all of you guys who are able to understand all these electronic problems/topics. Thanks!! Kim

    Hi Kim!
Thanx for your nice words! As for my knowledge regarding all this DVD stuff, I learned here on AD the little things that I know.

As for editing the shows in your standalone...lets say your kid wants you to edit his homework, let's say spelling,, but he did not write it on paper, he is just verbalizing what he wants to write; you can not actually edit, make any correction until he writes down his homework. And it has to be written on a medium that can be modified. The burner acts just as the pencil, it will write down what you ask it to do. But the information is not stored in the burner, and it can not be modified on the DVD. So, in order to be able to make any corrections, edit that show, you have to have that information stored in computer, where the information can be modified.
You can transfer that info by first writing to a RW DVD, or you could directly capture the shows into your computer, and for that you would need a TV(Video) Capture card.

I have only used Nero for editing some little clips. I mostly do DVD backups and AVI conversions. I know Nero can add chapters, create menus and label you clips.

You could also get a stand alone dvd recorder with a hard drive. This would allow you to record on the harddrive edit the movies and then record to DVD when finished..

Thanks cyprusrom and kjvsword! I appreciate the link to about.com. That helped a lot! And cyprusrom, you speak my language! I can understand the homework analogy! Now, I'll start my journey for finding the right one. I'm glad AD is here and that there are people out there willing to help newbies!

    Thanks again,
    Kim
