Hi, sorry for my ignorance but i just can't seem to cut a small section off of the front of an avi file with virtualdub, i found these instructions on how easy it was:

Just Load your AVI file into virtual-Dub and then set both "Audio" and "Video" to "Direct stream Copy" and then use the KeyFrame Buttons and the Slider under the Preview screen to select what Part of the File you want to save in a Seperate File then go to "file" to "Save as AVI" and give the File a name and save it and In a Couple Minutes you will have your cut avi file.

I just get the same avi file with nothing cut off the front, can anyone please help, i do get this error message when i load the file into virtualdub: AVI Stream 2 has an invalid sample rate. Substituting 15 samples/sec as a placeholder.

Would this be the cause off the problem or am i not using virtualdub correctly and if i can't do it with the avi file is there a way to do it with the converted VOB file, thanx for your help and time.

After deleting the frames, try selecting 'Fast Re-compress' under the Video menu.
I think that in 'Direct Mode', if the first frame being cut is a K frame, then all subsequent frames up to the next K frame have to be deleted also, else VirtualDub will not allow the cut.

    It isn't 'Fast Re-compress, it's 'Smart Rendering'.
Select 'Full Processing' for the video and the same codec as the source file.
It (I think) will only recompress the area of the cut, not the whole file.

Hi and thanx again, i managed to sort it out, i think the version i'm using is newer, i just tried clicking on some of the virtualdub buttons, there's two like arrows that point each way.
Once i selected the point at which i wanted to start my file i just clicked one of those arrows and a blue line appeared, then i dragged the cursor all the way to the end and just saved it as avi.

I apologies for wasting your time and will remember what you've told me for future reference but i do have another problem with the avi file, when loading into virtualdub i got this warning: AVI Stream 2 has an invalid sample rate substituting 15 samples/sec as a placeholder.
Well the audio is slightly out of sync, just enough to be unwatchable, is there anyway i can fix this, i also have the same film which has an inferior picture but far better 5:1 sound with no errors, could i use the good audio and some how blend it with the good picture quality file, swap them? thanx for your help.

Load the file with good audio.
Click 'Audio' 'Full processing mode' 'Compression' 'No Compression PCM' 'OK' then: 'File' 'Save WAV'

Load file with bad audio, then:
'Audio' 'WAV Audio' (load the WAV)'Full processing mode' 'Compression'
Select Lame mp3 and 48000, 128, CBR Stereo 'OK'
    'Video' 'Direct Stream Copy'
    'File' 'Save as AVI'

(If the saved/loaded WAV is 44100, that's what you select for the compression - unless you 'Convert' it under the Audio menu before compressing)

    Lame MP3 codec
Right click on 'LameACM.inf' file and Install

Thanx again Attar, i will be attempting that as i have a few files with similar bad and good audio but my problem has changed. It seems that the audio though being very poor wasn,t out of sync with the original avi file, its after the conversion to DVD format or VOB files that i lose the audio sync?

I've been using ConvertXtoDVD for a while and never experienced this, the only problems i've had is the classic stutter when converting NTSC to pal, the avi file is 29fps or NTSC and i'm converting to PAL.

Could this be the problem as i've noticed there's absolutley no visual stutter after conversion and is there a fix, thanx for all your help.
