Can you try another brand of CD.
The burner seems to have a problem with these.

for some strange reason, i tried it all. But i'm getting the same response. for some reason, i can only burn dvd's at 4x and the cd-r's just keep giving me calibration errors, what in the heck is going on?!

As a test, instead of using Nero, try a simple copy and paste of some files to a CD and let XP try to burn them.

If you uninstall Nero and Roxio (which sometimes interact with each other to cause burning problems) you can test the burner using XP.

The Nero clean tool is used to remove all traces of Nero (but retain your serial numbers).
nasayin provided a link for the best version of Nero 6 so that you can reinstall Nero when convenient.

Uninstall any Roxio programs and use RoxioZap to remove lingering traces.

When the programs are removed, copy files to a cd using XP.
Simply copy and paste a file onto the disk and see if it burns ok.

If it does, reinstall Nero and retest.
