    Hi guys

I have a mobo which i bough coz of lack of money.
now that i have got a job, i am thinking to upgrade the components on this motherboard.

I have P5vdc-Mx mobo, Pentium-4 3.0 Ghz processor, and 1 GB DDR-2 Ram on it with Normal IDE seagate HDD 200 GB

I want to put in SATA HDD and Upgrade processor. As i see it has got Socket 775, so can i install Quad Core processors on it. I have a 1 PCI Express x1 slot, which i thought would help me in using Pci-express graphics card. leter on i came to know that for graphics i need pci-e X16
so i had to buy AGP 512 MB Nvidia Graphics card. (i think it was 7600)
Where can i use pci-e X1 slot now?

and last thing, i have heard about water cooling, how is it done, what is it cost and can/should i go for it?

This is the link for my Mobo's details http://www.superwarehouse.com/Asus_P5VDC-MX_microATX_Mainboard/P5VDC-MX/ps/1483856

The board is not compatible with Core 2 Quad CPUs - there's a lot more to boards than just the socket - the construction of the board isn't cut out for the modern stuff. You will need to replace the board to bring this system up to date. This can be done with relatively minor expense by buying a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L.

and a reply to water cooler shall also be appreciated

Core 2 Duos aren't compatible - I don't even think Pentium Ds are compatible since the board is so old - it's to do with both the BIOS programming, and the physical components on the board, such as the voltage regulation, chipset performance, and so on, there are numerous reasons why the board is a dead-end for any upgrades.

As for the PCIe 1x slot - they have their uses, but there's nothing much you can put in those that you can't put in a normal PCI slot (the e-SATA bracket/card, Gigabit ethernet and so on are all devices I have used in old-style PCI slots).

As far as water cooling is concerned, you seriously need to know what you're doing as far as PCs go before you should even consider it. It's not that difficult to set up, but it's vital to get right, or you'll get leaks. Unless you're pulling off ridiculous overclocking though (and you certainly won't with a board like that one) it's wholly unnecessary.

There's nothing in your component list that says you can't play Crysis, however, in order to run it properly you will be severely reducing the game's detail level settings, hardly playing the game as it was meant to look - quite a lot of games are starting to make P4 3.0Ghz as their absolute minimum requirements now, and will run very poorly without a dual core CPU and a top-end generation 7 GPU (the 7900GTX for example). If you're willing to run games at minimum settings then that's fine, but there will come a time when they will lag badly even like those.

P4 is a good processor but not good enough for games, or at least not good enough to play games like Crysis smoothly. Upgrade when you can.

Indeed someone at my LAN put up with a P4 3.2Ghz for a very long time, but it eventually got so tedious that he had to upgrade.

yeah same with my friend, ha has a 3.0 P4, 512MB DDR 400 ram, gigabyte 6600 256MB gpu...seriously, he can play GRID and MASS Effect...believe it or not, and he says it runs smoothly. i'm a bit skeptic about that

Smoothly is different in various people's opinions. 20fps is considered smooth by some people. If you bottom out the detail and res for games, it'd be doable.

If they're noises it didn't make before, then yes - back up and replace, urgently. For more help start your own thread or post in the official PC building thread, rather than highjacking this guy's.
