Help Trying to Rip dvd's into AVI's. Just want the movie though...

    is there a good free program that i can use to just rip the movie into an avi? i just wanna rip it then covert it to a mp4. i can winavi as a converter. But dont know what program to use to make dvds into avis. i tired to use winavi dvd to mp4 but it always freezes
