    Hi everyone.

I have been lurking on this site for a bit and belive I am posting my question in the correct place.

Some background: I purchased a Sony DRU-830A to begin backing up my hubby's extensive DVD collection. I am using Fuji DVD+R media. I have downloaded DVD Decrypter, RipIt4Me, FixVTS1, DVD Shrink & Menu Shrink over the past few days, following many guides precisely step by step. The burner was bundled with Nero 7 essentials.

I have been reading so many guides and advice and am beginning to get overwhelmed.

I would like to follow a process that is not quite so time consuming (it took me 6 hours to rip, compress & burn Disney's Cars this evening). Is there such a process?? Or perhaps something where there's not so many steps involved so I can walk away from my computer if it is gonna take that long. I also have so many different DVD brands and would need software that decrypts all.

Someone please steer me in the right direction! I have considered Any DVD and Clone DVD...are they faster? At 6 hours per DVD it will take me forever to backup my collection! Please help...Thanks!!

AnyDVD and CloneDVD is pretty much a simple way to go. If you want programs with few steps then that would be the way to go. Plus it is updated frequently to keep up with the new copy protection that comes out.

You could buy just AnyDVD and use DVD Shrink or Nero Recode2 (if it came with your Nero bundle) and not pay money for CloneDVD2.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

A down side to AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 is that it cost money. ($39 Just for AnyDVD or $47.50 for both AnyDVD and CloneDVD2)

A plus for AnyDVD & CloneDVD2 is very few steps to take to make a backup.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

A down side to free ripping programs (RipIT4ME/DVDFab Decrypter) is there are a few more steps to get the DVD riped to the HardDrive.

A Plus side to the free Ripping Apps is that they are free.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

But even using the other programs you have listed above should in no way take you 6 Hours to backup a DVD.

1 Possible problem could be your DVD drive has been set to PIO mode. This is usually the case when people have slow backup times. Below is a link for you to go to and see if your DVD/CD drives are set to DMA mode and not in PIO mode.

This is What i do i have anydvd yes you have to pay for it but to me its easier to use and i use dvdshrink i start anydvd then insert my movie then open up dvdshrink and open the movie thru dvdshrink once thats done i see the movie quality i really dont like to go below 85% but sometimes it cant be avoided so ill do 80% if i cant get either i do 2 disks now if you want to keep all the trailers that fine but it will bring down the quality drasticaly usually i keep just the menu and the movie everything else i change to still image and the languages i only keep the english one's thats it after im done making all the selections i burn it and it usually only takes 20 to 30 minutes and your done you can try anydvd for free for 21 days so go ahead and give it a try after you check if your in dma modes hope this helps

I read through the guide and my drives are set to DMA mode. The secondary had been on PIO and my burner runs off the secondary. I am attempting another backup as I write....I am just curious though...how long should it take for a movie to rip and then for it to burn? How fast should my average read rate be? If I posted a log (though I am unsure whcih one to post) would someone be able to tell me if it looks like I am doing everything correctly? Thanks!!!

Depends how your going about doing it. If you go my route that i stated before about 20-30 minutes to rip and about 15 minutes to burn at 4x speed. In all it should take about 45 minutes to 1 hr Per DVD.
    Hope This Helps.

That gives me a good idea of what I should be looking for as far as time. I have been backing up the whole disc though...

I will give the AnyDvd trial a chance just to see how it is.

    Thanks Chop!

Times all depend on what your system specs are. CPU/RAM/HDD SPEED

In most cases you should be able to back up a DVD between 20 minutes to 1 Hr. Sometime longer if you have a slow system but usually no more then 1 1/2 Hrs.

If your secondary IDE channel was set to PIO mode and you put it back into DMA mode then you defiantly should see a big difference in backup times.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just a few tips for you to try to make a better backup. ...

Use quality media like Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden. (Or use media that your DVD burner recommends you use due to compatibility)

Make sure your DVD burners firmware is up to date.

Burn the media at 4X or half the rated speed of the media. If it is 4x or 8x burn at 4x if it is 16x burn at 8x.

Booktype DVD+R media to DVD-ROM if possible.

Set output size of DVD to 4360 in the program you use to transcode (DVD Shrink/CloneDVD2) so it does not burn close to the edge of the media.

Do not multi-task during burn or Transcoding/encoding of the DVD.

Thanks for the addl info Larry! The backup made after changing back to DMA was much faster, but still ran about 1 hour, 45min. I noticed in my DVD Decrypter log that I have a lot of background processes running, but am unsure which I can end without messing something up.

I downloaded the trial versions of AnyDvd & DVDClone and have to say I am impressed with ease of use and speed. It only took me 45 min to backup our newly purchased DaVinci code, with no problems!

I really appreciate the extra tips and will definately use them!

ive been telling ppl to try dvd4free and clonedvd if your looking for a fast backup this is the way to go it only takes about 10 mins. after you get it dled you need to close dvd4free then put ur dvd in then open dvd4free when the smile turns green open clonedvd and burn. only 2 things some ppl on this site dont like it and you only get the move not the extras.

Thats good stuff. I find it funny though that you used the da vinci code as your first and you have no problems. There is thread around here with ppl having problems with that movie. An you did it first try maybe you can give them some advice lol. As far as for your processes that you can stop download HiJack This. Run the scan and post it and your question in the Windows Forum and they will help you there.

    @Anais82

That is a good time for The DaVinci code. Glad things worked out for you. If you follow the tips above you should have great success backing up your DVD collection.

    About the advice below...
    I used the full quote!!!!

Stay away from DVD43(dvd4free) it has caused allot of members problems with their system. There are allot of better alternatives to use. (DVDFab Decrypter/RiptIt4ME/AnyDVD/DVD Decrypter with AnyDVD if extra help is needed)

Don't get me wrong DVD43 was recommended allot when it first came out but then members started having trouble with it and went to more stable/reliable ripping tools. You hardly ever see anyone recommend DVD43 anymore.

As to what SHE wanted was a way to backup her DVDs that did not take her 6Hrs to do. Which tells you right there that more then likely it is a Hardware problem not a software problem.

If I was in her shoes I would also want a quicker way to back up my DVDs if it took 6Hrs. The solution was to put the DVD drive back into DMA mode. Not start using DVD43 (Which is a very poor choice in DVD ripping tools)

King - I appreciate your input and while lurking did browse some posts about DVD43 but I wanted the whole movie with ability to cut or keep extras. Larry understood exactly what I needed...1 hour compared to 6 is certainly an improvement :)

Chop - I will definately try the hijack prog. and see what the Windows forum will have to say...

Thanks again everyone for the friendly advice!!!
