I was leaning toward getting the BenQ DW 1640. Here's the problem. It says the minimum requirement is Pentium 3 and 550 MhZ. I have a Pentium 3 and 500 MhZ. Do you think it would be any problem using that drive, even though I'm below it a tad, if all I do with that PC is copy DVDs ?? If I can't use that drive, does anyone know a dependable, DVD +R DL supported drive that falls under my minimum requirements and where I can get it ? Thanks.

There is usually a percentage of error calculated to ensure optimum performance. My guess is you would be okay with the 500mhz. I would think however that you would want to have as much ram as possible to assist your processor.

Not less than 512mb if you ask me and a gig would be better IMHO.

From what I have seen,Benq has some of the lowest specs when it comes to pc specs. I also agree that you should be ok. I've got a backup pc with the benq 1620.It has the p-3 celeron/598 mhz/256 mbs of rimm and it is one heck of a burning machine! A little slower on uncompressed dvds and really slow for compressed dvds.

Thanks for your help guys. I got the BenQ 1640. Tried burning for the first time using DVDXcopy Platinum and got the "This disk is CSS encrypted......this version of.... etc" error. That's after a succesful burn with the other burner. So, now I have a new problem. :( I'm sure it's a good burner, if I can just get DVDXcopy to work consistantly.

I'm no fan of x-copy. Dvd shrink and nero do the majority of my backups.Sometimes I have to activate anydvd in the background to help rip those newer sony arrcos encryptions. Anydvd also helps out majority of the ripping programs out there like x-copy/1-click/clonedvd/etc.

I have AnyDVD as well and think that this was the best money spent in a long time. I can rip just about anything, and If I can't within a day or two I will have an update that will get the job done.

Does AnyDVD copy protected discs right out of the box ?? Or do you need some special program with it ??

Anydvd is a background ripper. It helps other ripping and encoding programs to rip through those newer encryptions like the sony arrcos. It's updated very regularly, whereas majority of programs aren't.It also comes in handy for the riskier rip and burn on the fly for both cd and dvd.I use it occasionally with dvd shrink and nero.

It's very easy to use.Just activate it and you'll see the little red fox icon in your lower utility tray.No extra steps. You don't need this program on the majority of the originals, just a few.
