AVI to MPEG2 using TMPGEnc then DVD compatible MPEG2 to
VOB's using TMPGEnc DVD Author - then burn to disc

Nero does lots of things, very well, but encoding avi's is [bold]not[/bold] one of them.
Try the things scubapete says, TPMGEnc is a good and encoder or try mainconcepts encoder(trial versions available for both)

Is it out of sync on your PC or standalone player? Many standalone players have a problem with lyp sync with VCD and SVCD and the player would therefore be at fault, not the disc, but please give more details.
