    Hi there...

I've bought a Wireless USB adapter (Netgear) for connecting to the wi-fi network at the building I live at (someone has setup a network and has allowed us all neighbors to use it for free).

The thing is that although with my wife's laptop the network appears available, when I plug in the USB adapter onto my desktop PC it doesn't show anything at all!

I have followed the installation procedure by the book and I'm puzzled.

    Any suggestion pls?

XP recognizes the USB device but, I dunno if this is relevant or not, upon the completion of installation the netgear software disabled XP's own wireless driver for its own. So I'm using Netgear's driver and not native XP's.

    It's really weird...

I prefer to use XP's, I've never had a problem with it. Make sure you are using the same wireless technology. Most popular 802.11 B and G which will also work together. But there is also A and N. I've never used A and N is brand new. A will not work with B, G, or N. And i believe N will not work with A, B, or G.

Could be a week signal even if the other one works fine. They are two seprate devices, one maybe stronger than the other. If it is the signal, Hawking makes a good amplifier. I would first try seeing what XP can do though.

Found out that I had disabled my on-board LAN from BIOS. I enabled it and network settings appeared on the copntrol panel. I can know see all networks available.
