Any new tricks to block/hide Gmail text ads?

I'm a new Gmail user and only found out-of-date tips.

(About the ethics of blocking Gmail ads, please start another thread!)

I dont think that is possible, but I cannot see the point in blocking ads as I cant see the harm they do, I rarely notice them, and only realised that they were still there after you asked this question.

Just ignore the ads and you will forget that they exist, sorry I could not be of more help, I read on a few sites you can't.

Maybe you can use ad block programs my ZA firewall has oe and so does my browser FireFox

Why is it you want to block ads on gmail?

Add the following lines to your HOSTS file

    127.0.0.1 pagead.googlesyndication.com
    127.0.0.1 pagead2.googlesyndication.com
    127.0.0.1 www.google-analytics.com
    127.0.0.1 ssl.google-analytics.com
    127.0.0.1 www.googleadservices.com

You can download a HOSTS file with this and some other intrusive stuff from http://www.geocities.com/yosponge/updates.html Just make sure to rename the file you download from HOSTS.TXT to just "HOSTS." with no extension and put it in the c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\ directory if you're running Windows 2000 or XP, or just c:\windows for earlier versions.

Thanks but it doesn't seem to work. I added the lines you gave to
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\ but the ads are still there.

Btw, I use Firefox, does it matter? (And will switch to a Mac soon...)

A handy Firefox add-on CustomizeGoogle did the job! It's excellent, you can also block ads in the Google web search etc.

    https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/743/

Make sure when you save your HOSTS file, it saves as raw text/Ascii/MS-Dos, and that windows doesn't try to tack an extension onto it. It will try. Save it as "HOSTS." WITH THE QUOTATION MARKS. That'll also work for the file download I mentioned earlier.

I think Ad-Block or Ad-Block Plus will do what Kääpiö says, and more. It's also at http://addons.mozilla.org They have some good filter lists there too.
